‘Just Not Good Enough’ – Dogs Trust Vet Director Savages Kennel Club
The veterinary director of the Dogs Trust, Chris Laurence has issued a scathing attack on the Kennel Club.
Speaking in the influential trade publication The Veterinary Times, Mr Laurence’s comments left the Kennel Club in no doubt as to the feelings of the UK’s largest dog charity and its supporters.
“We have been telling the Kennel Club for years that it really ought to do something about the way its breed standards encourage genetic defects. It changed its standards a wee bit but not significantly enough to our minds.
“These concerns haven’t come out of the blue; it’s not that we didn’t know these issues were there, but the documentary (Pedigree Dogs Exposed) was the last straw as far as our trustees were concerned”
“We are saying that the Kennel Club should look at the consequence of what it hasn’t done in the past 50 years. We are more than happy to help in every way to resolve the situation, but doing it at a snail’s pace is just not good enough.”
For their part, the Kennel Club hit back at the decision to withdraw from Crufts by the Dogs Trust via seceretary Caroline Kisko who claimed the move “seems to be at odds with its (Dogs Trust’s) stated position”.
As the fall out from Pedigree Dogs Exposed continues, the National Dog Warden Association has sought to clarify and confirm its reasons for withdrawing from the UK’s largest dog show, organised by the Kennel Club.
Addressing its members, NDWA president Sue Bell declared:
As an association commited to the promotion of responsible dog and pet ownership in the United Kingdom, NDWA was left with little choice but to act swiftly as a result of the allegations made during the recent documentary Pedigree Dogs Exposed.
In solidarity with other organisations whom it must be remembered we have not always seen eye to eye with on a variety of issues over the years, the momentous decision was taken to not attend Crufts 2009.
The decision was taken even though without a shadow of a doubt it is the biggest and most prestigious canine event attended by NDWA during the whole year.
Members work hard over the four days to promote responsible dog ownership and the role of the dog warden in society and their commitment and dedication shows the importance NDWA places on being at Crufts.
The decision for us as an association to not attend was a corporate one and in no way prevents any members from attending Crufts or any other Kennel Club events.
There are times in life where it is necessary to stand up and be counted however difficult this may make things, for us as an association, this is one of these times.
