Working Animals Get Support From Archbishop Desmond Tutu

Archbishop Desmond Tutu has backed a new initiative by one of the world’s oldest animal charities, which has been launched to coincide with World Animal Day taking place later this week. (October 04 2008).

An on-line petition created by SPANA (Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad – http://www.spana.org) highlights the neglected but critical role played by working animals in providing an income to millions of people in developing countries around the world. Through its pioneering veterinary programme, SPANA was the first charity to help both animals and the people who depend on them after it was established in North Africa in 1923.

SPANA Chief Executive Jeremy Hulme said: “The petition will send a clear message that the interests of working animals do not need to be separated from those of the people whose livelihoods depend on them. By helping animals, you can help people as well. This was SPANA’s founding philosophy and we are delighted that Archbishop Tutu is the first signatory of the petition.”

“Signing up to the statement on-line will show you recognise the importance of working animals and livestock to the lives of millions of impoverished people around the world. SPANA will be presenting the names to both the UK Government and the United Nations as part of our ongoing efforts to raise awareness about the neglected role played by animals in the well-being and livelihoods of people.”

“Helping animals and helping people need not be mutually exclusive activities.”
