The Stop & Shop Supermarket Company in the United States, following a recall by MARS Petcare US, Inc., announced it is removing PEDIGREE(R) Small Crunchy Bites and PEDIGREE(R) Large Breed Complete Nutrition dry pet food products from sale. MARS Petcare has issued a national recall of these products because of potential contamination with Salmonella Schwarzengrund.

The following products are affected by this recall:

– PEDIGREE(R) Small Crunchy Bites Adult Nutrition 4 pounds
UPC # 0-23100-05104
– PEDIGREE(R) Small Crunchy Bites Adult Nutrition 8.8 pounds
UPC # 0-23100-14719
– PEDIGREE(R) Small Crunchy Bites Adult Nutrition 32 pounds
UPC # 0-23100-31483
– PEDIGREE(R) Large Breed Complete Nutrition 20 pounds
UPC # 0-23100-29158

Affected product can be identified by the letters PAE within “Best Before” ID Code on the product label [example = 808G1PAE01 12:00].

Animals infected with Salmonella Schwarzengrund may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Some pets will only have decreased appetite, fever or abdominal pain. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and experiences any of the above symptoms, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends contacting your veterinarian

In an effort to prevent the transmission of Salmonella from pets to family members and care givers, the FDA recommends that everyone follow appropriate pet food handling guidelines when feeding their pets. A list of safe pet food handling tips can be found at:

Upon hearing of the announcement by MARS Petcare, Stop & Shop immediately removed the items for sale from its shelves. Stop & Shop has not received any reports of illness or injuries associated with the consumption of these products.

Consumers with questions about the recall should contact MARS Petcare at (866) 298-8332. Consumers who have purchased the affected products may return them to Stop & Shop for a full refund.

The recall does not affect UK purchased Pedigree pet food brands.
