A Hampshire firefighter was called to an animal rescue with a difference after two dogs became trapped on a swimming pool cover.

Rural Safety Officer, Anton Phillips, was called to a property in West Tisted at 04:54am on the morning of Thursday, September 11 to reports of two dogs trapped on a pool cover.

It emerged that the dogs had strolled onto the pool cover and become trapped when it moved away from the poolside under the dogs weight, trapping the German Pointer and Labrador.

Watch Manager Phillips, said: The dogs had escaped their own property about a mile away and ended up at the poolside. To a dog, a pool cover would look like solid ground, so they walked onto it.

Using a heavy limb crook, I was able to pull the dogs close to the edge and from there I used a quick release noose to bring the dogs onto solid ground. Once the RSPCA arrived they scanned the dogs for computer chips and we were able to locate their homes and they were safely reunited with their owners shortly afterwards.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service is a leading authority in the area of animal rescue attending roughly 300 incidents a year.

Earlier this year the Services team of four animal specialists held the first national Animal Rescue Conference in the New Forest and as a result HFRS now host and chair the National Animal Rescue Practitioners Forum.

The stop message on the West Tisted incident was received at 05:45am.
