Los Angeles Home to 60,000 Chihuahuas

As if we didn’t already know it, further evidence today that dogs are and always will be subject to cultural trends, fashions and celebrity endorsements:

Carried in handbags and adored by celebrities, Chihuahuas have become top dogs in Los Angeles — and most of them are called Princess.Almost 60,000 of the tiny dogs are registered in Los Angeles County, beating Labradors and German Shepherds as the most popular breed, according to a database compiled by the Los Angeles Times.

Some 1,262 of the registered Chihuahuas are called Princess, followed closely by Chiquita and Lucky, according to the database, which gathered facts and figures on more than 500,000 dogs registered with authorities by pet owners in the county.

That’s about half the number of dogs actually thought to live in the area because many people don’t register their dogs.

Socialite Paris Hilton helped popularize Chihuahuas as the ultimate fashion accessory, often being photographed with her dog Tinkerbell. Britney Spears at one time had three — Bit Bit, Lucky and Snow White and was often seen on the red carpet cuddling a tiny pooch.
