World Animal Day 2010 is Nearly Here: YOU Can Help!

Monday, 4th October, is World Animal Day!  World Animal Day isn't a recent addition to the calendar, it was started in 1931 at a convention of ecologists in Florence as a way of highlighting the plight of endangered species.  Since then it has grown to encompass all kinds of animal life and is widely celebrated in countries throughout the world.  October 4 was chosen as it's the Feast Day of St Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.  It is intended as a day of celebration for everyone in the world who cares about animals and is not restricted to any one nationality, creed, religion, political belief or ideology.

The official World Animal Day website was launched on 4 October 2003 with the aim of encouraging everybody to use this special day to commemorate their love and respect for animals and celebrate our special relationship with the animal kingdom.  The increased awareness of animal issues this initiative creates will lead the way to improved standards of animal welfare throughout the globe – and what an achievement that will be!

It is a great honour for me to be the UK Ambassador for World Animal Day and Here in the UK, we are lucky enough to have three Celebrity Ambassadors who 'walk the talk' in support of the World Animal Day initiative and would be delighted to make themselves available to you for interviews.

v  Anneka Svenska – Wildlife Presenter and Conservationist

"World Animal Day is a wonderful chance for animal lovers all over the world to come together in solidarity over one extremely important cause: to save and protect the animals on our planet and the delicate environment they live in. Without animals in the world it would be a very sad place. We must learn to protect and nurture them to ensure the world will always be a place where they can roam free and never become extinct." Anneka

v  Maria Daines – Rock Music Artist, Songwriter and Animal Advocate

"I am very proud and happy to be a part of World Animal Day and to help, alongside millions of compassionate people, to raise awareness for the voiceless and to shine a light on our animal friends, some of whom currently exist in a dark world built for them by cruel, uncaring hands." Maria

v  Louis Barnett – Chocolatier, Conservationist and Britain's Youngest Entrepreneur

"It is a great honour to be a Celebrity World Animal Day Ambassador.  We have so little time to save the many endangered species on our planet, so we must take action now if we are to save these remarkable animals from extinction…  Since I launched Chokolit, I have been striving to raise awareness of the plight of endangered animals and their ever diminishing habitats.  World Animal Day gives us a wonderful opportunity to join together and shout with one loud voice – together we can make a difference!" Louis

In addition, we currently have 70 World Animal Day Ambassadors representing 63 countries – all of whom are working hard to raise awareness in their own countries.

    * World Animal Day is not linked to any one individual, organisation or campaign, but belongs to everyone.
    * Participation in World Animal Day is growing rapidly.  More than 80 countries got involved in 2009 and the number of events more than doubled from the previous year!

Last year saw a vast array of events taking place all over the world, organised by tiny grass roots groups with very limited means, to high end gala dinners and award ceremonies – proving that this day really is all about celebrating the animals, no matter what size or how wealthy the organisation is.  If you follow the link at the top of the website home page to '2009' and previous years, here you can read about some of the inspiring events and view fabulous images.
