K9 Magazine once again finds itself offering credit to News International, the giant publishing organisation responsible for some of the UK’s leading newspapers. Like it’s a stable-mate, The Sun, The Sunday Times deserves recognition for highlighting an horrific case of animal abuse and treating the story with the seriousness it deserves by putting it on its front page.
Animal cruelty awareness will only be given the public attention it warrants if publications of the size and stature as the Sun and Sunday Times continue to highlight the seriousness of the issue and we at K9 Magazine are pleased to see this trend continue, even if the stories themselves continue to be heartbreaking.
Here’s the latest shocker.
AT FIRST glance the white-washed single-storey building could pass for a holiday chalet. Tucked away among Leigh Animal Sanctuary’s complex of kennels, the bland exterior of “Block 8” gives nothing away.
But anyone venturing inside encounters a sinister scene: a stuffy boxroom in which thousands of dogs have allegedly met their deaths.
“It stinks of dead dogs in there,” said Jane, a former staff member who worked at the site in Greater Manchester for years. “It is a sickening smell.”
The dominant features of the white-walled and red-floored room are two industrial-sized freezers.
They are the last stop on what former staff and greyhound trainers say is a conveyor belt of killing, starting with dogs being delivered at the sanctuary’s front desk on an almost daily basis; leading to lethal drugs fired directly into their chests; and ending with the bodies dumped in the freezers.

I it about time this so-called “sanctuary” was unmasked. This is a purely commercially based unit, operating for profit with no thought for the animals it purports to give sanctuary to. The things that go on at LAS are well-known throughout the area but because, tragically, they are doing nothing illegal nothing can be done about it. It is to be hoped that now, however, in the name of morality, the councils who deal with LAS will remove their licence to operate.
There is a planned vigil in memory of the dogs who have lost their lives because ‘legally’ this country allows them to do so. It is planned that this PEACEFUL vigil will take place this Saturday between 11am and 2pm. There will also be a minutes silence in memory of the dogs who have been killed. Details to follow.
This vigil is going to be announced officially by Greyhound Action.
Dogs welcome
Address to meet at 10.45 for an 11am start
The Greyhound (pub)
East Lancs Road, Leigh, WN7 3SE
Please don’t park in pub car park as they are happy to support us but we don’t want to deny them business!
Absolutely sickening – we have a ex-racing greyhound and she is very intelligent and a great pet. I think the whole sport should be banned. People who make money from animals either dogs or horses make me sick!!
