Endal’s Successor Has Arrived!
After nearly two year of intensive searching all around the world for the very special little Dog that is eventually going to take on the role now filled by Canine Partner Endal…. it has been announced that the hunt is now finally over! Last Thursday evening a new arrival entered the Parton Household in the form of a little 8 week old Yellow Labrador puppy called Endal Junior “EJ” and already he has started his assistance dog training in earnest to become Endal’s most worthy successor.
“EJ”, head over heels about his new role
Endal having acquired worldwide fame by being voted the world’s most intelligent dog, Dog of the Millennium and is now recognized as the most decorated peace time dog ever…. his ability to operate a cashpoint machine and more recently the chip and pin machine has made him arguably the world’s most famous assistance dog too. Over 300 film crews from all around the world have filmed Endal going about his daily chores and he is also half way through the making of a movie about his amazing story. For the last eleven years Endal has been faithfully at the side of his disabled human partner Gulf war veteran Allen Parton enabling him to experience a real quality of life and independence through his unconditional love and devotion.
At twelve years old the veteran yellow Labrador Endal is now becoming a pensioner and very soon preparing for a well earned retirement but not before taking on the most important role of mentor and training a junior to take over his job. “After every meal Endal will pass me up his food bowl” said Allen “and very soon EJ will twig that is what dogs do and he will follow Endal’s lead and it is this learning by example which I dearly hope will enable EJ to achieve without any pressure.”
“It is also so ironic that little “EJ” should have been found in Liphook a mere 15 miles from where we currently live said Allen. The breeder Joy Venturi Rose, of Leospring Labradors (http://www.leospring.co.uk), actually grew up in the house on the opposite side of the road from my childhood home, in Haslemere, and she even went to school with my older sister, Sadly though because of my head injury i have lost all memories of her and our past but I guess some things are meant to be and we have met up again through our love of a very special breed. She has bred some absolutely stunning dogs and many are prize winners, being from part show and part working stock …EJ’s pedigree is just so ideal for the intended role we have in mind.
I recently received an email from our dear friend Jo Coulson, once the secretary for the Labrador club of great Britain, saying that Joy had recently had a litter of Labradors of which three were yellow boys (Labrador + yellow + boy the search criteria). I quickly arranged to have a viewing and Sandra my wife, puppy operations manager for canine partners did the early assessment and EJ maxed out on the points ….scoring very highly. On our very first visit to see the three dogs EJ was the one that settled down right along side the wheelchair as if that was where he had chosen to be. I had a real feeling of De za vue as this was just how Endal and I first met and bonded. A period of reflexion, to consider all the effects of the changes and impact of taking on a new puppy, took place and at eight weeks old we adopted EJ Arizona (Joy named all the puppies after Royal naval warships which is most appropriate as the dad is called Anchorman and Allen had himself served in the Royal Navy for 20 years)
From pulling Allen into the recovery position to putting his bank card in to the cashpoint and chip and pin machines Endal has amazed everyone with his self taught abilities. Endal was socialized at canine partners by a puppy parent but never had any formal advanced training which makes his story even more amazing. Endal was partnered with Allen when he was just one year old and has gone on to achieve so much which Allen attribute to Endal’s unquestionable ability to learn
and problem solve. It has been already been agreed by canine partners that Endal will retire to me when the time comes said Allen “and it will by my absolute pleasure to care for him in his old age and hour of need..permitting me in some small way to repay him back what is an unrepayable debt!
What are Endal’s view on the new arrival? Well after a few days of the obligatory growling and barking by Endal thankfully young EJ quickly accepted his junior role and position in the doggie hierarchy and once again a sense calmness and order has descended on the Parton household. Endal now sports two shadows the newer one quite small but always at his side!

Is this the same Endal Junior that I heard about during the Crufts radio programme in 2007? Surely, he must be at least 18 months old by now?

So with Canine Partners you find your own puppy to train as a successor dog? What a strange policy.
Most programs provide a fully trained successor dog for the partner and you would not have to wait two years for the training of a puppy.

Dont forget that allegedly Mr Parton and Endal are the sole faces of this organisation.
It seems that nobody else is allowed any airtime in case it may affect the Allen and Endal story.
How can Endal operate a chip and pin machine, can he actually input the numbers using his paw, how does he recognise them?
Assistance dogs are brilliant, but there are lots of them that are basically unsung hero’s that work really hard with their partners in whatever specialist role they are employed. Whilst Endal is apparently smarter than Lassie and Skippy the Bush Kangaroo together, there are other dogs out there working just as hard and diligently.
How about hearing about them too?
Is there also a Royal Navy warship called HMS Arizona Joy, I have heard about the USS Arizona (US Navy)
Not having a go at either Mr Parton or Endal, just think that as an organisation Canine Partners should perhaps include and publicise other partnerships.

I truly find it amazing that all these added comments are actually nothing more than personal attacks and gripes… on what is merely a successful working partnership between man and dog(s). It is such a shame that all these voices fail to use their real names but instead hide under a cloak of anonymity but such is the nature of the internet these days. All this back biting and negativity stinks of nothing more than petty jealousy and envy. I have met this team many times at Crufts and they have represented all that is good in the assistance dog world.
Historically… it is apparent that “Patience” has constantly attacked any article about Endal which has appeared on the K9 web site …I can only imagine that Endal must find all this most flattering to think he is such an important point of focus in this particular person’s life! I do have to wonder though if this person is capable of having any “real life” relationship other than in cyber space in this manner?
I find it an inspiration that Mr Parton is prepared to undertake and train up his own successor dog himself and in doing so, presumably, freeing up a dog from the training school for another disabled person. I can’t believe for one moment that this is an easy option to choose but I have a sneaky admiration for this gentlemen, that he will achieve and EJ will be the most worthy of successors to Endal.
A just have to wonder whether EJ will equally become the target of this particular group small minded group of people during his career. Human nature can be quirky at times.

Credit makes valid points – a charity with only one face lacks depth. Surely there must be other dogs who are just as good within the charity? Let’s hear more about them and not about a puppy which may or may not cut the mustard as an assistance dog in perhaps 2 years time!

I am just so totally mystified at why Credit and Doobie are so hung up on “this charity issue” thingy? I guess they have their own personnel issues and beef in all this of which we are not apart of. I do though find it immensely endearing that we have been introduced to this little Andrex puppy EJ, via a K9 update, truly the life blood of any assistance dog organisation I would have thought. One would have had to have lived on the Planet Mars not to have heard of his predecessor, Endal, and I am actually very intrigued to see how a dog of this phenomenal caliber is going to be replaced after such an illustrious career. I have some words of advice for EJ though “do wear you stab proof jacket at all times because the knifes are out!”. I hope that we are kept updated on EJ’s progress which I will personally follow with great interest. As I already regularly donate to one of the major Assistance dogs organisations in the UK it interests me greatly at the possible cost saving to these groups of an individual training up their own helping hound. Go young EJ Go, you have a fan here already xx
