The Retired Greyhound Trust will celebrate man’s best friend at its biggest-ever event

On Saturday 27 September, the Retired Greyhound Trust (RGT) will host the Great Greyhound Gathering at Nottingham Racecourse - its biggest-ever fundraising and awareness event.

Greyhound Gathering

Expected to attract some 2,000 dog lovers of all ages and upward of 500 ex-racers, the Great Greyhound Gathering will be a true celebration of canine companions and will help spread the message that greyhounds make great pets.

Organisers are anticipating that this year’s event will be even bigger and better than the 2007 Great Greyhound Gathering which saw greyhound enthusiasts from all across the country come together to champion the breed.

“This event is the perfect opportunity to spread the message that greyhounds make great pets and to demonstrate how wonderful these dogs are. The Great Greyhound Gathering will be a real celebration of man’s best friend!” explains RGT Director Ivor Stocker.

A fun day out for all the family, there will be games and activities for adults, children and canine companions. Children will stay entertained with go-karts, a visiting fire engine, colouring competition and much more while adults can enjoy a sponsored stroll around the racecourse or browse the parade of stalls. With popular attractions such as the pampered pooch corner and the dog shows returning again this year, there will be plenty in store for four-legged visitors.

The fun dog shows will culminate with one dog being crowned Retired Greyhound of the Year. In 2007, the title was claimed by the handsome white and fawn ex-racer Sunny, who scooped the £5,000 prize for Greyhoundhomer, the Essex branch of the RGT that found Sunny a new home once he retired from the track.

Ivor Stocker continues: “We are delighted to be holding the Great Greyhound Gathering again this year. It is a wonderful opportunity to show the dogs off in a relaxed and fun environment geared towards the family. Everyone enjoyed themselves so much last year, we couldn’t resist doing it again. There will be lots going on at the 2008 gathering, something for all members of the family to get involved in.”
