The UK’s largest animal charity has been accused of ‘washing it hands’ after a discovery of more than 50 inbred Dalmatians – some found dead in swimming pools – was uncovered in Cornwall.
The RSPCA is quoted as having responded to a complaint by removing some dogs but taking no further action on others.
The dogs are owned by breeder Michelle Cousins, who allows them to free run around the farm where she is based. Locals have complained on a regular basis about the nuisance behaviour and condition the dogs were in.
It is thought that all the dogs can be traced back to one litter and are suffering genetic health problems such as deafness and blindness.
There has been two incidents reported of dogs straying and drowning in nearby outdoor swimming pools.
A neighbour is quoted in the local newspaper in Perranporth: “It’s horrendous. They have all got mange and some of them seem to be blind.
“You would be absolutely horrified at some of the things we have seen and heard.
“Everyone is fed up with the howling and we have had enough. The RSPCA just aren’t doing enough and appear to have washed their hands of it.”
Cousins lost her original property having failed to keep up payments on a mortgage and is now said to be squatting on the land where she and the dogs live.
The RSPCA said: “We are continuing to work with the owner and give advice on a weekly basis.
“The conditions aren’t ideal but any animals that have needed veterinary care have got it and in terms of water, shelter and food the dogs’ needs are being met.”
A stray was collected by a dog warden who reported the animal to be in a poor condition over 12 months ago.
The puppies are sold for up to £500 but one woman demanded a refund having discovered the dog she purchased to be deaf.

The usual confusion between what the council and what the RSPCA do rages here!
Barking dogs is a council issue under the Environmental Protection Act.
Breeding issues are down to the council as well.
If these dogs have shelter, food and water, the RSPCA cannot do anything, don’t want to sound like a spin doctor for the RSPCA but they are not to blame.
Unless of course because they, the RSPCA continue to make out they deal with all matters animal via their confusing TV adverts, the public think it is an RSPCA matter?
The local council need to grip this breeder especially if she is selling these unfortunate animals for such a large amount of money then she needs to adhere to the law.
Is she licensed by the local council?
Credit and blame always need to be apportioned correctly!
why would anyone want to by from a puppy mill, or back yard breeder
