A man from Nuneaton near Coventry has been convicted of animal cruelty after an investigation by the RSPCA revealed that he had beaten a puppy to death.
Kelvin Hill, who is 34 years old, was sentenced yesterday at Nuneaton Magistrates Court to 20 weeks in custody and given a life ban on keeping animals.
Hill was in custody but refused to come to court despite pleading not guilty. The court heard that he had gone to his ex-girlfriend Karen Harper’s house for money. She let him stay in the house with the three- month old Labrador cross puppy, Marley, while she collected her benefits.
When she came back she found the kitchen covered in blood and the puppy dead.
Hill told her that he had grabbed the puppy by the legs and smashed him into the floor. The puppy had injuries consistent with a severe trauma. He had a fractured jaw and leg, trauma to his chest and internal bleeding on his brain.
RSPCA Inspector Herchy Boal said: “This was a deliberate, brutal, act of cruelty. We are pleased with the sentence and grateful to Miss Harper and her mother for coming forward as witnesses. Without their evidence, Hill may well have not been convicted.”
