To coincide with National Poop Scoop Week (Monday 23-Friday 27 June 2008) volunteers sick of dog fouling on one of Mansfield’s beauty spots are turning to bright pink dye to shame dog owners into picking up their pooch’s poo!The idea came from John Wood, Sherwood Forest Community ranger who supports the Oak Tree SAFE volunteers who work in partnership with Mansfield District Council carrying out conservation tasks at the Oak Tree Heath Local Nature Reserve and Site of Special Scientific interest.
SAFE volunteers are spraying any dog mess found in the area with pink tree dye supplied by Mansfield District Council in an effort to highlight the problem and encourage dog owners to use the bins placed around the site.
The dye used is environmentally friendly because it biodegrades over time.
John Wood, Sherwood Forest Community Ranger says of the scheme: “The scheme has been tried and tested in other areas and a reduction in dog fouling has been recorded; I am confident this will also be the case here.”
Councillor Eddie Smith, Portfolio Holder for the Environment at Mansfield District Council commented: “Although dog owners face a £50 fine for not picking up their animal’s waste; as a District Council we would much rather the environment was kept clear in the first place and if this scheme helps to combat the problem; it is appropriate that we should support it.”

You should be thankful for dog walkers. But they should pickup after their dogs.
Dog walkers and dogs are the most reliable and inexpensive security resource in society. With their daily presence in our parks and on our nature trails, they are the eyes and ears of the community, frequently the first to discover crime and consistently a deterrent to it. We should be encouraging the presence of dog walkers and their dogs rather than implementing public policies that restrict and prohibit them.
Good Dog !!
Wait for the ridicule to come in from the locals. This has been done in a number of different areas usually either spraying or putting flags next to the poo!
Instead of just highlighting the problem it can have a negative effect for the council or whatever organisation, locals usually countermand with why not just clear it up rather than spray it!
i thought it was a £10 000 fine
