its the same problem with had with the pit 19 years ago. we didn't get rid of the problem by banning pits, we just moved it onto breeds like the staffie and rottie.

irresponsible owners are the problem. some know their dogs are aggressive and still let them off the lead, thinking "oh, if someone comes a long, i'll just put him back on the lead" a human can run up to 15mph a dog can run up to 30! how do they really think is going to get their first! my dogs have been attacked a couple of times by dogs (non were staffies) because of owners like this.

i think the police should be able to give on the stop muzzle and leash orders to dogs that show unprovoked aggression.

under section 3 they have to seize any dog that is dangerously out of control in public, which they can't affored to do nor have enough kennels. if they gave muzzle and leash orders to dogs before it attacks someone instead, the more aggressive dogs they could deal with. of course they should lift the pit ban and only sieze dogs that hurt someone or the owner has broken a muzzle and leash order.

This discussion is well balanced and shows the true nature of these dogs. As with all animals, if you do your duty and take responsibility, you will have an exceptional family pet. Staffys can be a bit funny around other dogs but this is no more (in my experience) than with other breeds. The unfortunate thing is, these idiots swaggering around busy town centres with them on huge chains are going to wipe the breed out.

People are that stupid nowadays they seem to think if you ban staffys the louts will mend their ways and start reading the bible. lol. Tackle the problem you effing cowards and let the millions of true staffy owners enjoy the fun these energetic dogs bring.

I'd ban the louts and the idiots screaming for a ban.

I commend the RSPCA for this article. Finally a bit of COMMON SENSE.

I have a lab lurcher x (male) and a staffie (bitch), he is approx 8 years old and she is just over a year, both bought from our local rescue center (8 years apart). I have to say that my lab x is more of a problem with other dogs than the staffie ever could be, and it has to be said the older he gets the worse he is getting. It does not matter how much or how we try to dicipline him he has a mind of his own and there are just certain types of dogs (mainly collies) that he simply hates with a passion!! She on the other hand loves everyone and everything, but other peoples perception when they see her bounding towards them is that she is going to attack because of the grunting noises she makes when running and the reputation they have picked up due to the amount of 'NEDS' that own these wonderful dogs. I wholly believe that it is not the dogs at fault, rather the idiot at the 'loop end' of the lead. I am not saying that all staffies are blameless or harmless, but for the majority of them with the correct training and a truly loving home they are one of the most dependable and loving dogs anyone could ever own.

i share a house with a staffie, in fact I'm his favourite toy. (It's my wife's little baby). He is a great big blue dope. Everybody he meets is his bestest friend ever . (Not to happy about other dogs though). his smile is so broad you cant help but give him a kiss & cudde then laugh at him. His one failing is he can't stand to see any other animals in the garden. He even barks at birds sitting on overhead TV aerials. (Like I said, a dope). I have yet to meet a vicious staffie, though i've met a few snappy poodles and spaniels in my time. Blame the owner, not the breed. If you can't be bothered to train or control them or don't even want to, don't have any dog.
