Lucozade Saves The Day For Abandoned German Shepherd Pup

Poor Lucas (aptly named after the energy drink that potentially saved his life) has come on leaps and bounds since he was found covered in mange whilst just a small pup.

It was last year that a rescue centre in Ireland was contacted by a lady who had found a ‘thing’ in her shed. The ‘thing’ turned out to be a young German Shepherd Dog who was so badly covered in mange, it was hard to tell exactly what animal he was, never mind what breed of dog.

The dog was taken to the Cottage Rescue in Ireland where the staff gave him some Lucozade to rehydrate him. The staff there nursed him back to health and he was sent across to the UK in the hope to find him a forever home.

He went into the care of Sussex German Shepherd Rescue who would help rehabilitate him and hopefully find him a new home. Ronnie Richardson, owner of the organisation, said: “A lady called one of the rescuers we work with over there and said she had found this horrible thing in her shed. No one could tell what he was, his face was swollen and he had so much hair missing. He was on death’s door when the rescuer found him.
He was able to recover from severe dehydration using a bottle of Lucozade, earning him the name Lucas.”

The rescue placed Lucas in the expert hands of Miss Pam Williams, a dog fosterer who has had over 22 dogs in the last 7 years in her care. It has been a slow recovery for Lucas – who coincidentally now lives on Lucas Road.

“He has been to the vets over 35 times. I have had to spend a lot of money on vets who specialise in skin disorders and he is still under a dermatologist, but he has come on in leaps and bounds.

“We think he got mange from his mother when he was born and because he was abandoned, and no one did anything to treat him, it got so bad. They think he must have been deaf at one point because the mites were going inside his ears. It must have been unbearable for him.”

Pam has now decided to keep Lucas permanently in her home. It looks like a nice happy ending after-all.

  4. I am the person that founded Cottage Rescue and got the call from a member of the public. There was no legal action taken on this poor German Shepherd as was there is no owner, I presume he was abandoned on the quiet road and he wandered onto the peoples property and sought refuge in their shed where they leave the door open for the cat to go in and out and they found him there after work when they went out to feed the cat. I went in at 7p and collect him, he was in a pretty bad state with mange, dehydration and was also emaciated, I bought him home to Cottage Rescue and he went to our Vet Marta Stephan the following morning and she put him on Ivermectin, Cortisone, Eye Drops and Antibiotics and I was also giving him Manuka Honey and tins of Sensitivity diet and puppy nuts and Lucozade on his feed which he loved, he was Neutered, Vaccinated and Microchipped before he went to the Uk after spending 2 months at Cottage Rescue he is now happy in his new home with Pam thanks to Ron who contacted me to send him over. Hannah of Cottage Rescue.

  5. So glad to hear that Lucas is being treated now bless his heart. I can’t even imagine how bad he felt with all the skin issues and everything else but I’m glad he’s better now and has found a good and attentive home to spend the rest of his days.

Is the 2nd picture Lucas now? If so, all I can say is amaaazzziinnnggg!
