Clover Moore nominated in MDBA Dog Owners’ Choice Awards

New South Wales Independent MP Clover Moore has been nominated in the category of “Excellence in Contribution and/or Leadership in Canine Affairs” in the inaugural MDBA Dog Owners’ Choice Awards.

Ms Moore is well-known for her strong stance on animal welfare issues. Her latest initiative is her proposed Animals (Regulation of Sale) Bill which would ban the sale of animals in pet shops and markets to reduce impulse buying which is believed to be responsible for many pet purchases. The Bill would promote purchases from more responsible sources such as registered breeders and animal shelters.

The awards are an initiative of the Master Dog Breeders’ and Associates which was established in 2004 and aims to provide a clear distinction between ethical dog breeders, dog welfare organisations and dog owners and others who may be less ethical in their field. Its main focus is on the people who are involved with dogs, rather than the dogs. It also promotes public awareness of pure breed dog breeders, the dogs they breed and responsible dog ownership and care. Membership is open to anyone with an interest in dog breeding, welfare, ownership or care regardless of breed registry or where they purchased their dog.

“The MDBA Dog Owners’ Choice Awards are designed to give dog owners the opportunity to nominate, recognise and honour excellence in all areas associated with dog ownership,” said Julie Nelson, member of the MDBA Board of Directors.

“They provide an opportunity for those involved in any activity or service with dogs to be acknowledged for their achievements and commitment to canine well-being.”

“Clover Moore’s nomination recognises her commitment to canine affairs and to the ongoing welfare of companion animals.”

Nominations have been made in 35 categories including Master Breeder of the Year, Responsible Pet Owner of the Year, Best Vet and Best Pet Friendly Tourist Destination. The winners of the 2007 Dog Owners’ Choice Awards will be announced on June 26 in the Royal Room at Virginia Palms International in Brisbane. The awards presentation will be followed by a seminar featuring world-renowned vaccine research scientist and practicing veterinarian, Dr. W. Jean Dodds DMV who will speak about canine vaccination protocols and issues, immunology and nutrition.

“This is designed to benefit all dog owners,” said Julie Nelson.

“Dr Dodds is internationally recognised as an expert in this field.”
