Veterinary charity, PDSA, has announced the appointment of Jan McLoughlin as its new Director General.

Jan, who became PDSA Director of Veterinary Services in April 2003, will succeed Marilyn Rydström on her retirement at the end of June after more than nine years in post.

Following a rigorous selection process involving more than 40 – mostly external – candidates undertaken by a panel of the charity’s Trustees, PDSA Chairman, Freddie Bircher, was pleased to confirm Jan was unanimously considered to be the best candidate.

”Jan is energetic, motivational and results-oriented and her experience in PDSA, together with her background, fit her very well for this important leadership role,” he added.

A biochemist with an MSc in microbiology, Jan’s career prior to joining PDSA was mainly in the food and drink industry in a variety of operational and senior management roles.

She joined PDSA in 2001 in the role of Business Development Director, taking responsibility for leading a number of new business initiatives within the veterinary department.

Jan says, “I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to lead PDSA through its next phase of development, building upon the work carried out by my predecessor, Marilyn”.

“Over the last five years, as Director of Veterinary Services, I have gained a deep respect for the hard work, dedication and professionalism shown by all the staff in the PetAid hospitals, enabling the clinical teams to treat many thousands of sick and injured pets every day. But I recognise that none of this vital work would be possible without the support of the rest of the organisation, our fundraisers, our volunteers and our donors. I look forward to working with them all over the coming years.”

In her role as PDSA Director of Veterinary Services, Jan has seen the number of free treatments provided to sick and injured pets increase by 60% to more than 1.8 million in 2007. She has also contributed significantly to the roll out of preventive services at all 47 PDSA PetAid hospitals, the development of outsourced out of hours cover for PDSA’s emergency services and new contractual terms for veterinary purchasing.
