A free dog safety education programme has been launched and is now available to Staffordshire primary schools. The Bark Busters’ ‘Dally Says’ scheme was launched by Staffordshire-based dog therapist Isla Clarke to pupils at Spring Croft Primary School, Blythe Bridge.
As a result of growing concern and media awareness surrounding children and dog safety, Isla decided to use her experience and expertise as a dog therapist to provide a free service to schools in her county.
Isla comments: “As a parent myself I am concerned with the recent media focus on children and dog safety and as a dog therapist I feel I have the knowledge and tools available to me to help tackle this growing problem.
“It’s important for children to know, from an early age, the correct and appropriate way to treat a dog or any animal for that matter.
“During these presentations I want to educate and create better awareness amongst children so we are better equipped to deal with potential dangerous situations.”
The education programme looks at various situations children can find themselves in and offers practical advice on how best to deal with those situations. From being chased by a dog, to walking past a dog tied up outside a shop, all these situations children encounter on a weekly basis.
The talk is followed by a short educational video, ‘Dally Says’ that asks the children questions about the information they have just heard. The talk is then rounded up with a colouring competition, where children are asked to colour in a poster which display’s a top safety tip, e.g. Never pull a dog’s tail.
Schools interested in running the Dally Says programme should email Isla at isla@barkbusters.co.uk or call the free phone number 0808 100 4071.
