On Monday 15th March, over 40 students from the Pet Department at the Toyko Business School visited The Mayhew Animal Home in London to learn more about the practices and protocol of a UK inner-city rescue centre.

The Japanese students were eager to learn more of how a small animal welfare centre operates in the UK and officers from Mayhew International, as part of the Mayhew Animal Home were able to discuss more about welfare practices here and how they can be implemented abroad. In Japan, there are similar rescue facilities, although they have to operate often on much smaller budgets. Some Japanese municipal centres are funded in part by the local government although their policies on animal welfare do not often extend as far as the efficient adoption procedures we have in the UK.

Mayhew International’s Project Officer, Chris Sainsbury, said: “It was fantastic to show the students round the facilities we have here at The Mayhew Animal Home and share knowledge about best practices for global animal welfare. They were most impressed with how we apply the animal welfare act of 2006 and the dedication of Mayhew staff and volunteers and were encouraged to take this knowledge back to share in their home country. Mayhew International works in many countries and our veterinary staff have been on visits to rescue shelters operating in Japan also. It is crucial that we work together in the UK and also abroad to improve the standard of animal welfare across the globe.”
