Members of anti puppy farming group Puppy Love will take their campaign to Wales on 1st of April.
Members and supporters will gather outside Carmarthenshire Council Offices 3 Spilman Street,
Carmarthen, SA31 1LE at 12 noon. The peaceful protest is mainly the idea of Welsh members of Puppy Love who want to make their feelings known.
Also attending will be Jan Gilmour author of a petition for the council to enforce licensing rules and
apply the Animal Welfare acts 5 Freedoms. Jan hopes to hand updated petition to Mr Philip Davies head of public protection . Signature numbers are still growing.
Members are aware that the Welsh Assembly has plans in progress to improve conditions for breeding
dogs but feel urgent action is needed for Carmarthenshire, the puppy factory farming capital of Wales.
Some 84 licensed premises and 87 unlicensed premises lie within the confines of Carmarthenshire contributing to the suffering of thousands of breeding bitches and stud dogs. Puppy Love feel this county should be the first to implement any changes that the Welsh Assembly decide to put into operation.
Members chose All Fools Day as they feel it appropriate for the council who still refuse to admit any cruelty or neglect is happening within their boundaries despite numerous TV and press reports proving the opposite.
if you would care to join us please do, you will be made very welcome.
Highly Recommended: This could be the most important link you EVER click as far as your dog’s life is concerned – see why….!
As far as implementing ANY pupppy farming laws go through be careful what you wish for. You just might get it. I don’t breed dogs or any other animals for that matter. However I have seen these do gooders in action in the US where I am a citizen. It’s the age old story give an inch and they will take a mile. I don’t believe in puppy farming. It”s disgusting cruelty in most cases, but not all
dog breeding kennels are puppy mills. For instance if you show dogs and like to produce your own show prospeect and plan to do this seriously it will take more than one bitch and one dog. In all reality it should have four different lines. Send your bich out to be bred? Surely you jest. I know of people that have done that. What they got back was a bitch in poor condition, some with venerial diseases, a big board bill (not mentioned in the breeding contract) and in all reality no idea what dog your bitch was bred to. One case I know of is a bitch rated number three all systems was spayed without the owners permission. Be careful if you plan to breed your bitch. Not all litters will produce a show dog. Those puppies will need to be placed in good homes. Finding them is a hard task. If you are doing it and doing it right it will not be a big money maker, more than likely you will end up in the red.
Most of the people that work in closing down puppy mills have a personal agenda. If you bred your bitch and are looking for homes
for the pups that don’t meet the standard you want and advertise them you could have the “great ones” show up at your door, seize all your dogs. A big feather in their cap. It happen here and more than llikely will happen there. Oh, one more thing. I read where you mentioned the cruelty the stud dogs and bithes endured but neglected to mention the condition of the pups. Good luck.
In answer to Delta ATM
Firstly, I object to being called a ‘do gooder’. Secondly we are not trying to implement ANY puppy farming laws – probably due to the fact there are no puppy farming laws to implement. What we, (us ‘do gooders’), are trying to achieve is the implementation of the 5, minimally basic, Freedoms of the Animal Welfare Act.
‘Give an inch and they take a mile?’ – who are you talking about and in what context?
Surely it goes without saying that not all breeding establishments are puppy farms – who said they were. But is a bona fide breeder who shows his dogs and breeds them solely for the evolvement of the breed, likely to have up to 150 breeding bitches of multiple breeds kept in outhouses, sheds, car boots and the like? I don’t know about the ‘good ol’ US’, but puppy farming is a completely different entity to a breeder mating a dog for the health and temperament of future generations. This should be left to the people who are much more knowledgeable than us ‘do gooders’.
‘Most of the people that work in closing down puppy mills have a personal agenda’. Yes they have – to stop the animals suffering.
With regard to your statement about sending ‘your bitch out to be bred’, surely YOU jest!!
Anyone looking to seriously breed their dog would source a recommended and highly respected breeder. Wouldn’t you take it upon yourself to attend events where you might see your chosen breed in action? Wouldn’t you take the time to speak and learn from different breeders or show judges?
The bitch that was returned with a big board bill and in poor condition to the people you know, may I ask how long the dog was at the breeders? Although not an expert I thought mating took place over one or perhaps two nights, you make it sound as if the bitch was there for weeks. Perhaps the people you know should have taken the time to research breeding and contacted a breeder who valued his/her own reputation. I am sorry but after reading through your comment more than once, I simply cannot find the point you are trying to make.
Oh, one more thing. We do mention the cruelty and suffering the stud dogs and bitches endure. We do so because their neglect continues throughout their breeding life. The puppies do suffer, but for a shorter period of time. Once out, help is often at hand. Only by improving the lot of the puppy farm breeding stock can we improve the life of their offspring
I’m afraid Puppy farms do exist Delta ATM…i wish they didn’t.
The sooner this trade, which is only worried about getting a fat profit,(usually evading taxes)is stopped the better…the council are renowned for turning a blind eye to this;it is disgraceful.
Hopefully soon, there will be enough pressure placed on them that they will be forced to take action.
Good luck with the protest…would love to join you guys, but might not be able to get time off work.
My,my did I rattle someone’s cage. FirstI am aware there are more puppy mills around than I care to count. I can count several within five miles of me. I am also aware that these puppy mills register their pups with AKC. It was reported (look through your computer, and no I don’t believe every thing I read) there are articles, that is plural, where AKC is there to help register their pups at a lower fee. While I am on the subject of AkC it has been reported that they are frequently seen at dog and puppy auctions being ever so solisitous to people registering pups they have imported, entire litters. I read where one man had a bitch there that was blind. He was selling her as a brood bitch. His remark to another “genleman” was ” “It don’t matter if she can see or not, she can still have pups”.She was supposedly registered with AKC. I have no idea what breed it was. Does it really matter?
It seems the term do gooders was not taken seriously. It should be. There are people in this world that will get their fifteen minutes of fame anyway they can. If they can get into a show kennel that is clean as a whistle, the dogs are in good condition they will push their way in and grab dogs, get the media in on it and they have scored big.
As far as the party that sent their bitch to be bred and she came back spayed they did their homework. The kennel they sent their bitch to has been in business for fifty years with one breed Before AKC even embraced their breed. The US is a big country, dogs heat cycles are not set by man. The people sent the bitch when she should have come in heat or season whichever you prefer. She was in good condition, I have known the owner of the bitch for a long time. One thing they are not cavalier about is their dogs. The owner of the bitch lived on the east coast. The dog was on the west coast. The other dog I mentioned was sent to the top terrier
handler in the country. He was flown home at the handlers convenience and was in terrible condition. Yes even some people do know what they are doing, they also trust too much.
I have watched the number of do gooders grow for years, why shouldn’t they? Most of them are paid well for what they do and then there is that fifteen minutes of fame.
Personally I would never go in a pet shop let alone buy a puppy from one of them. As long as there are “pet shops” there will be puppy mills. What do you think they do with all the pups they produce? We are talking big money and big money often leads to people that couldn’t care less about the pups they sell, ah but the money does.
Good luck to all of you. Please don’t be too naive.
No, my cage doesn’t rattle that easy, your comments were obviously appropriate to your own situation and have little in common with our own campaign.
Yes we are well aware that our own K.C. register puppy farm dogs, in fact so are the K.C. which is why they have introduced the Accredited Breeder Scheme, a half-hearted futile attempt at resolving the situation.
You comment:
“I have watched the number of do gooders grow for years, why shouldn’t they? Most of them are paid well for what they do and then there is that fifteen minutes of fame”.
Not in this country you haven’t!!
Does anyone reading this thread know of a ‘do gooder’ being paid? As for the 15 mins of fame – the anominity of your average puppy farm campaigner is essential to be able to gather evidence against puppy farms. Look carefully at any of ‘our’expose videos’, you won’t find any rescuer in full ‘Lady Docker’ regalia, telling the cameras and press of the hardships and suffering he/she’s been through,- this is the UK
Have you tried voicing your opinion in the U.S. where I’m sure your valid comments would be far more revelant?
This is about an Anti-Puppy Farming protest that will take place in the puppy farm capital of the UK – Carmarthenshire, Wales, on the 1st April 2010. It is hoped that action will be taken to enforce, (not change), licensing laws that are already in place and to ensure that at the very least, the 5 Basic Freedoms of the Animal Welfare Act 2006 are applied to every breeding establishment. Therefore contrary to what you say, we don’t have to be careful with what we wish for, because what we wish for should already be in place.
I do respect your comments but feel that they are not relevant to Puppy Love’s ‘All Fool’s Day’ protest.
I don’t have a personal problem with the do gooders. I don’t breed dogs as I said before. However I have seen people that breed and spend a great deal of time not to mention expense caring for their dogs only to be raided by Animal Control, PETA or HSUS. They grab the dogs and stuff them into crates that were made to hold only one dog. Then they transport them in their fancy trucks to the pound that was condemned at least thirty years ago. These were people that bred there own show prospects. I have been in their kennels
they may not have been fancy but they were clean, the dogs were not show groomed but were clean and did not have matted coats. They all also had chain link runs that were large enough for four dogs but the most I ever saw in one was two. All dogs had a run with only one dog in it. Then shortly after this incident they raided a private home, broke in when the older gentleman opened the door, pushing him aside and grabing their one dog. Then they took the man and and his wife through them to the ground and hand cuffed them. Then started violenty questioning them where they had their other dogs. The older people had no other dogs, but they were thrown to the ground that was covered with snow, it was quite cold. After a long period of time getting no answers to there questions other than the man kept telling them they were at the wrong house. I guess the do gooders got cold and tired, even though they had down jackets and snow boots on, the older couple did not have any outdoor clothing on. Guess what? They got in the trucks and started them up to get warm. I guess they got bored and started reading their orders and golly gee they had the wrong address. They yanked the man and women up and set them free, quibbled about taking their one dog that had been sleeping in front of the fireplace. Exasperated and tired they threw the dog to the ground and left. No apology. The do gooders should have been drawn and quartered. The victims did not have the money to sue, I guess they were thankful to get out of the mess alive. This may sound like a figment of my imagination, I wish it was.
These people do not come all decked out in designer clothes, heavens no. They have to look like poor bedraggled, hard working people protecting the world of animals from unbelievable conditions.
I agree with you about puppy mills where animals are kept in horrid conditions. You are one hundred per cent right. This kind of thing should be closed down. No arguing from me about that. Like I said as long as there are stores that sell animals there will be puppy mills. No decent breeder in his right mind would sell an animal to one of them.
This do gooder thing started out as a good idea. But like many good ideas turn into a bad idea. A little bit of power can be a dangerous thing. As I said I wish you the best of luck, just watch your back.
PS: Pardon my spelling, actually I can spell but this is something that is terrible. I think I go a bit off. I have seen and heard too much.
I will be at the protest on April 1st certainly not as a do gooder but purely to let the council know that a growing majority of decent people care passionately about the welfare of animals and will keep trying to improve their lot. Hopefully we can shame the council into enforcing existing laws to ensure that any animal is treated in a kind and humane way.
I realise that to many, breeding puppies is an easy way to make a living. These same people only care about the end profit and if the dogs suffer appalling conditions along the way..well do they care?
This is wrong. They must be made to obey the laws. We are not asking for 5 star luxury kennels and steak dinners we are just asking for clean, warm, disease free kennels, vet care when needed and regular decent dog food. If this makes me a do goder well I can think of worse things to be.
Please urge any friends/family to attend the peaceful demo in Carmarthen on the 1st and maybe with the power of numbers we can make a difference.
