Dog Death Policeman Guilty of Animal Cruelty (Not Banned From Keeping Animals)

Submitted by K9 Magazine News Editor on February 22, 2010 – 5:46 pm3 Comments

A police dog handler who left two German Shepherds to die in an unattended, over-heated car has been found guilty of animal cruelty.

39-year old PC Mark Johnson’s car reached soaring temperatures of above 84F in June of 2009. The two dogs he left in the vehicle, both died.

He told the court he was suffering with despression, which is why he forgot about the dogs in the sweltering car.

The court gave him a six-month conditional discharge and a fine of £2,500 – however he was NOT banned from keeping animals.

The judge seemed to happy to accept that the PC’s account – of having depression – was responsible for his lack of judgement.

The dogs would have died over the course of about 20 minutes.

The RSPCA who brought the case welcomed the verdict.

While I have no wish to see PC Johnson hounded out of a job, justice has not been done here. He should have been given 250 hrs community service with the RSPCA or similar, to make some restitution. He should also not be allowed to keep animals again. He seems to have played the mental health card well, but if he was that ill surely he should not have been at work?

It is a disgraceful outcome – effectively not a punishment at all.

I find this case most disgusting and agree that the Policeman should have recieved a harsher punishment, but then again it is a Police Officer isnt it and not an ordinary member of the public, but the most disgusting thing about this case is how the R.S.P.C.A. says this was an act of cruelty when the R.S.P.C.A. themselves executed not one not two but ten yes ten German Shepherd Dogs with a bolt gun, without even assesing these dogs for suitability for rehoming why because they was deemed unfit to rehome, as they where acting agressive when the R.S.P.C.A. enterd thier home, now if anyone knows the GSD breed will know that these are herding and guard dogs and have a natural instinct to protect thier family and home, but the R.S.P.C.A. just went into thier territory and the dogs responded aggresively and the ten dogs was dragged out of thier home one by one by a grapple pole and was shot in the head straight away with the bolt gun, in which itself is a pure act of cruelty, read the full story at germanshepherdrescue.co.uk

    I FIND THIS OUTCOME DISGUSTING!!!
A Police Dog Handler’s priority is surely his Dog/s. PC Johnson should be banned from keeping animals FOREVER. He is a Dog Professional and hence should be more accountable for the treatment of his dogs than “Joe Public”. What message does this give out to the masses and how can the RSPCA & CPS expect to take other lesser trained people to court for animal neglect/cruelty?
