hello; I was curious about my dogs death. on feb 1 2011 .my dogs name is RECCO he is american bulldog boxer mix. he truly loved the grandkids and wasa very loyal companion. well here is my issue. about the last two months he had seepage flowing from his eyes.and had rear leg muscle aches after hard running. the seepege in the eyes was there most of the time as i would wipe away every so often. a very strange thing happend after i had given him a biscuit bones treat out of a brand new box. just (1) treat. at 12;30 pm.later that night he had vomited on the floor. then he was upsidedown on his back whinning and groaning indicating he was not feeling good. about 15 minutes later he wanted outside and i observed that he was vomiting again.when he came back in his eyes appeared to be very (GLASSY).he had laid down for 5 minites. again this time he had just laid at the same spot where he started vomiting and having a soft to somewhat liquidey bowel movment at the (sametime). he had turned compleatlly limp. i imeadiatly lifted on the couch.at this time he was breathing very fast for about two minutes.after this he quit breathing and his tounge was dropping out . needless to say he had died. has anybody had this occur with there dog? and does this appear to be a MYCOTOXIN POISIONING? he had died at 10:15PM. I am suspecious about this being it was only a little over 10 hours after i give him (1) biscuit bones treat. if anybody could give me any information about this sad ordeal it would be very much appreciated. Recco is truly missed. i will have to say that he was my super sidekick.

Last Friday, one of my dogs died. I have 6 rescued dogs -2 days earlier I fed 2 of them a cheap can of supermarket dog food ( in Portugal). Within hours, both were vomiting - by next morning they were not eating but drinking lots of water - shivering and neither left their beds. I took them to the vet - while there, one dog started to have a seizure which was uncontrollable although the vet tried everything. After 24 hrs we had to put her to sleep. The other ( who had less of the food and is younger) is now recovering but still not his normal self. I have considered other causes but I KNOW it was the dog food and am now having it tested for mycotoxins - at my expense. Will post the results if anyone is interested.

My beautiful Greyhound/Whippet, at this moment is at the vets. I have been told that toxins were in his body. I have also been told that he could be brain damaged as he had a huge fit on the way to vets.
He is not a dog that eats thing off the ground so just thought it was a bug that lodged itself into his gut. Tonight after opening a tin of well known dog food to mix with kibble for the rest of my pack, the smell was disgusting so I discarded the tin but my mind has gone into overdrive....i wonder if the pack of 6 tin dog food that I bought all together was contaminated. 2 of my stronger dogs have now come down with diorreaha.
Will contact makers tomorrow.

I too almost lost my dod from dog food poisoning. It happened right before the big recall..I used to feed my afghan hounds the most expensive dog food that money could buy--both kibble and canned. I remember this dog food was about $2.00 per can, I bought a case of it, and gave my Moon about half a can mixed with his kibble one day. It had been a few months since I had even used the canned food, as I usually feed my dogs a mixture of kibble, cooked turkey or chicken breast and rice. Apparently, the lot that this can came from was later recalled, and had I fed him more, I would have lost him. It made me sick knowing that if one of the best rated, safest dog food brands could potentially kill my dog. From that point on, I started feeding my dogs only natural foods--natural kibble, turkey, and rice.

Today, three years later, we had a newly adopted afghan at the vet for some surgery, and the vet asked us if there was a chance of her getting a dose of D-Con, because her blood was so thin. They had to pressure wrap her belly, and wanted to keep her overnight. I was terribly shocked, since I am so careful about what I feed my animals after almost losing my Moonie.

When we go on walks, the dogs do not get near anything harmful, we keep them on the road, we have no cleaning supplies in the house that are not tested safe for animals (it really limits our shopping choices!). I just cannot imagine what it could have been unless perhaps there was some kind of toxin in the rice that we use, or the kibble that we use. However, this kibble we have used for quite some time, now I just do not know what to think.

Your Bundy is a lucky guy, and Debi, your JRT's are also lucky to have mom's and dad's that love them so much.

I've been in Afghan Rescue for 23 years, my roommate has been in Afghan Rescue for 44 years. I am stumped a little, but I know now I am at least headed in the right direction. The poison scare still exists, only in a different way. Some afhans do raw diets well, others do not.

I will be sending a sample of my dog food to be analyzed as soon as possible, along with the rice that we use. My research led me to this article, and you two are not the only ones to have problems, I know from my rescue groups, but you are the only two who spoke out in this forum.
Thanks for your article and input.

Bundy is a very lucky dog to belong to a man such as yourself.

I too had problems with dog foods. My little Jack Russell has convulsions and develops hot spots when fed commercial pet foods. The best way I have found to keep him healthy is to feed raw prey model. His packmate is also fed that way. Both are now very happy healthy bouncy little JRTs.

Most of the ingredients in the average dog food is based on fillers of wheat, corn, etc. Dogs are carnivores and cannot digest these. They are meat eaters not omnivores. Then add into the mix that there are a LOT of things that come from poor sources. What little meat in them are often from meat that is tainted, sickly, may have drugs in it from the original beast or may even have things that just shouldn't be there such as old bits of equipment or even (yes, no joke) collars. There are also countries that import items to our relative countries that do not consider their own peoples and animals health in food processing.

You were treated very poorly by this company. In the US, they would be held acountable for its failure to determine the source of the problem. I am sure you were not the only victims. I will never feed 'animal grade' food to my pets again. If I wouldn't eat it, they are not fed it.

I hope that Bundy makes a good recovery and that he lives a long time to give you the love and loyalty you so obviously deserve.

Take good care
