Let’s Get it Straight, Britain is NOT a Nation of Animal Lovers

Ever heard this before, “Britain is supposedly a nation of animal lovers but…..” a line often delivered just before going into detail about a new animal related atrocity, cruelty statistic or tale of abuse against animals.

Every week, without fail K9 Magazine can report on a new animal cruelty case the details of which would turn the stomachs of any right-minded animal lover.

Every week K9 Magazine is bringing news of an increase in cruelty cases or a new level of sheer brutality committed against an animal.

Today we hear that 2005 saw an increase in the number of stray and abandoned dogs.

The message is simple. Britain is simply NOT a nation of animal lovers.

There are many millions of animal lovers in Britain who provide their pets with the absolute best of care and an idyllic lifestyle but how can we honestly describe this nation as a whole, as an animal loving one when cruelty cases are up, more dogs are being abandoned year on year and the sheer horror of some of the vilest acts committed against pets is revealed, often resulting in a patheticly meagre punishment for the purpatrator?

How can Britain call itself a nation of animal lovers when men such as Shaun Furgusson receive paltry punishments when found guilty of truly heinous acts of violence against animal victims?

How can Britain honestly say it’s an animal loving country whilst there remains a ‘No dogs welcome’ culture in many public places. Compare this to many Scandinavian nations, Holland, Belgium, France and the USA for example.

They say the first step to tackling a problem is to admit to it. So let’s admit to ourselves that Britain has a long way to go before it can really call herself an animal loving country.

The vast majority of the millions of Briton’s who share their lives with animals REALLY DO love their pets. Sadly the pervading culture in Britain is still sadly, very much anti-dog and many dog owners simply try and fit in, in a society that just about tolerates dogs and their owners, whether they admit as much or not.

It is the exception to the rule when a vicious animal killer receives anything other than a slap on the wrist from the courts. That’s because the law is not set up to treat them seriously enough.

It is the exception to the rule when a shop, hotel or tourist attraction is genuinely dog friendly. Sure, we may experience dog tolerance but genuinely dog friendly? Rare, very rare.

It is the exception to the rule that we hear abandoned dogs are on the decrease, cruelty against animals is on the slowdown or legislation to protect pets is prioritised at Government level.

We’re more educated on pet care than ever before and the level of information and advice on becoming a pet owner has never been more accesible but until the nation tackles the problems that are clearly not going away it’s time to stop pretending that we are really a nation of animal lovers. The figures just don’t add up.

Just feel I had to make a comment as I am still so angry from yesterday, when my husband found a dog wandering the streets in the snow, running into the road not knowing where to go, limping because it had probably already been hit by a car which most probably the driver decided to ignore the fact that it had hit an animal, and just to top it all no one to contact to come and collect the dog and keep it in a safe place until its owners? claimed it.
There seems to be no dog shelter, dog warden or emergency number that were answering their phones and this was a weekday before 5pm, in the end it as desperate measures I had no other alternative as I have a dog of my own who would not take too kindly to having another dog on its territory, I phoned the police to see if they would take it in, and their attitiude was appalling.
The point being ‘a nation of animal lovers’ – I think not, I am nearly in tears just thinking about it.
