Help Us in Call For Tougher Sentences for Animal Abusers
June 4, 2006 by Ryan O'Meara
Meet Shaun Furgusson. Say hello to Peter Dibden. Introducing Lee Howard, Leighton Martin Collins and Wesley Lloyd Bryan
All of them have something in common. They’re animal abusers of the cruellest kind. They also share another common bond. They’re all out and about mixing in society with you and I.
Furgusson: 6 months prison time. His crime. Abducted his neighbour, Tracy Bainbridge’s dog Chrissie, and subjected her to a shocking tirade of violence including.Throwing her at a television
Beating her with an assortment of improvised weapons
Cutting off part of her ear.
Breaking 5 of her ribs
Causing her severe brain damage
Puncturing her lung
Shatteringher teeth
Dibden: Executed his own pet dog, Max with a Samurai sword. No jail but a £900 fine.
Lee Howard: Abandoned his three dogs, leaving them to die a slow and torturous death of starvation and dehydration. He got a 6 month prison sentence.
Leighton Martin Collins: Admitted to punching his pet Yorkshire Terrier in the face so many times that it had to be put to sleep after the dog, one of the world’s smallest breeds of dog, had “shown him up”, as Collins put it.Collins had been drinking and admitted to having had 5 pints of beer prior to the incident. He was drinking at the public house where his partner is the landlady, and felt that the dog was “showing him up” in front of the other customers. He was sentenced to pay vet costs of £1,012.89 but did not receive a prison term.
Now meet James Hipwell: He was released from a 6-month prison sentence following a high profile court case. His crime? He tipped some shares on a website and in a newspaper column before going on to buy some himself knowing their value would have risen on the back of his tipping.
Take your choice. They all got no more than 6-month sentences except Dibden, he got none. There’s every chance you could bump into one of them going about your daily business, maybe you’ll sit next one on a bus or train. Happy about that?
Today we learn Wesley Lloyd Bryan, found guilty of neglect after two puppies in his care were discovered with horrendous injuries caused by being burned with scalding water and left for dead whilst Bryan and others ignored their anguished cries.Bryan is, at the time publication, on the run.
When he is eventually apprehended he’ll learn that he’s been punished for his crimes. He’s been given a 10-year ban from keeping animals. What, you thought he’d be getting a more severe punishment? After all, he only boiled a couple of puppies alive, broke one of their legs, ignored their cries of pain for four days and then went on the run from the Police. You don’t think a 10-year ban on keeping animals is enough? We (K9 Magazine) have said it once and we’ll say it again - IT’S TIME FOR ANIMAL ABUSERS TO GET REAL PUNISHMENTS TO FIT THEIR SICKENING CRIMES.How, in anyone’s mind can it be right that a person capable of killing his own pet with a Samurai sword should not get jail time? How can someone who abducts a dog, tortures it and then pretends to help the poor animal’s worry-stricken owner search for the missing pet get the same time in jail as a wide-boy who’s greed got the better of him? We’re not for a moment suggesting that fraudsters don’t deserve jail, they do. But come on, who would you rather be locked up right now? Who would you rather share a bus or train ride with?
Britain needs to change its stance in the cruellest cases of animal abuse. We all take a collective gasp when hearing of these shocking crimes in our newspapers and we assume justice will be served through the courts. The facts are that real justice will never be served until the courts are given the authority to hand down sentences severe enough to fit the level and nature of the crime.
K9 Magazine is a non-campaigning publication. We don’t preach to people how to look after their pets. We don’ pass judgement on pet politics, tail docking, hunting, electric collars or the like. We print the news, the facts and not our opinion. Today we make an exception. Today we ask our readers and any right minded people to help us put pressure on the Government to make changes to enable courts to hand down tougher sentences to animal abusers. Please help us.
By joining Pet Owners Parliament you can get your voice heard by the decision makers who decide the laws relating to animal issues and punishments to cruel animal abusers.
If you care about animal welfare and the punishment handed down to animal cruelty perpetrators please sign up to become a member of the Pet Owners Parliament. It’s free and it takes just moments to make a REAL difference.
Thank you.

I Think that animal abusers to get banned from going near other people’s dogs cos the animal abusers are complete bullies&Cowards and should get locked up for a total lifetime cos Animal Abusers are Scumbags,Smegheds,Boneheads&Thickies.Animal Abusers Like Mr.Gillis John McDavid(Fatty) of 19 Lindsay Crescent in Largs(North Ayrshire)in Scotland should get put in Jail for the rest of his Life and be left to rot there for good. Before My Beloved Pet Dog Bluff Died on November 4th 2008,Mr Gillis John McDavid the evil Fat Ratbag&Scumbag&Cruel Gossiper Lifted hit Foot and Kicked My Late Dog Bluff after He Received Orders from His Son Campbell McDavid’s Ex Girlfriend Fat-Ass Frump Miss Angela Bowie of Greenock.I Really Think That Animal Abusers should Suffer the Consequences after they abuse other peoples Pet Dogs&Be Barred from going near animals.Animal Abusers should suffer.

Don’t the courts realise that these disgusting people who abuse and torture animals often go on to other violent crimes and murder of children and other vulnerable people? When will the establishment recognise that violent crimes against people OR animals are more serious than monetary crimes? Oh no, I forgot - money is much more important, isn’t it???
Seriously, these people are abnormally sick and dangerous. Jail them now!
Reply
I would support much harsher sentences with regards to all forms of animal cruelty. The judicial system today is much too lenient and do not give out the appropriate sentence.
If an animal is mistreated, abused or a victim of cruelty, who is going to speak out for them?
Reply
I would definately support harsher sentences and punishment for those who treat animals cruely. Animals have feelings too but they can’t tell anybody about them, unlike humans.
Reply
I think that all Animal abusers should be punished, they have no right to hurt any living Animal, maybe if there was a tougher punishment these sick individuals would think twice before they act so cruelly. Animals have no voice we need to help them as much as we can, its such a cruel world.
Reply
Most assuredly the sentences for animal abuses such as you describe should be much more severe. The current practice of leniency sends out altogether the wrong message, implying that such behaviour is acceptable. To those people who really don’t care about animal mistreatment, I’d say they should remember that the sorts of people who can treat an animal with such appalling viciousness will be mete out similar savagery to people.

I would fully support any campaign that would help give these evil “humans” , tougher sentences (if you can actually call them human!! I’m not implying that they are animals either, that would certainly be a great insult to the animals!) We need to make the public aware that this behaviour will not be tolerated and hopefully they may think twice before committing this cruel crime. As previously mentioned, it is a very cruel world!

How in the world can anyone know that crimes such as these are being perpetrated against these poor, defenceless animals and turn the other cheek. There really is no-one as blind as those who refuse to see - but people (& in particular the “powers that be” who are in a position to put legislation into place to ensure that tougher sentencing WILL be mandatory) MUST now be made to see & those responsible have to be held to account for the suffering they cause.
Enough is enough…………how many more truly innocents have to suffer through “our” ignorance, hatred & plain indifference!
Reply
People who are cruel to animals are very sick people & need to be punished either prison (or though these are being overcrowded) or a mental place, or made to work with animals (under strict supervision).
Reply
I fully support your campaigh, there should be longer, tougher sentences (but not in the soft jails we have)
These sub-humans should be giving the same treatment they gave the poor aminals they abused,

Abusing the helpless, the defenceless animals is just inexcusable. Much harsher sentences need to be delivered, not just a ’slap on the wrist’ of 6 months.

I would give them a taste of their own medicin, let them see what its like to suffer.

I totally support any action that punishes these sadistic, poor excuses for human beings, that think harming any animal is their right. All animals need protection and the laws are just not tough enough to stop the problem. How many times does the establishment need to hear that people who abuse animals can go on to abuse other people including small children, before they take some serious, truly punitive action? Maybe if the abusers were harmed as they have done to these poor, innocent animals, they might start to reform.
Reply
Tougher sentancing is most definately required for anyone who abuses an animal. Don’t let them get away with it.

It is terrible how dog abusers get next to no punishment. A dog/cat is still a living being and can feel pain. Many serial killers start out with abusing animals so when you look at it frm a human stand point of view we need to stop these people where they should be stopped. If we make them think its okay to abuse animals then they say why not move onto humans as well? Its never okay to kill any dog/cat or person and we need to make that clear with our laws!
Reply
im all for better policing and greater powers to stop the abuse of animals ..

Animal abuse needs to be stopped its wrong, all the abusers need harsher punishment, heavier fines and imprisonment and made sure that they never own another animal in their life

There is definitely a need for tougher sentencing. Abuse of any kind to animals should not be tolerated.

People who hurt animals are sick, they should have much tougher sentences. Animals are living things just like us, they have every right and more to be on this earth. If somone kills an animal it should be tret as a murder.

What has happened to dog being mans best friend? to my knowledge this is till very much the case. I am appauled that living, loyal and loving creatures can be viewed so unimportantly by the so called Criminal justice system. It seems as if animal cruelty cases are treated as being nothing more than a waste of time, a nuisance at least that is the impression i received having read the above article. This has to stop as a tax payer i have absolutely no objections to cases like these being brought to justice and its about time they were. It is a disgrace that a nation of supposed animal lovers tolerate such injustices. Enough is enough!!
I whole heartedly support your campaign
God bless you and this cause x

The people guilty of these wrongdoings have either mental health problems or are born with psychopathic tendencies thus making them dangerous to all living things and not just animals. They are also cowards and bullies. Unfortunately, we live in an age whereby people are all too willing to turn a blind eye and children and animals suffer as a result.
I wholeheartedly support your campaign.
Tougher sentencing is one option - I would personally favour punishment to fit the crime with widespread media coverage to make others think twice.

Its about time that the right to live a worthwhile existence, free from abuse and torture was extended to all animals - all creatures of this planet. We all deserve a chance to live a good life - the best that NATURE can give us. A wasp has as much right to live as a human, so does a dog, or a cat. The dog gives love and loyalty, joy and companionship, They protect us to the best of their ability, and for the most part we repay that trust - but some ‘humans’ think otherwise - think their pets are there to take out their frustrations upon - all because they (the ‘human’) is in fact defective in some way - this should be punished the same way they would be punished for harming another human - we are on this earth together - we are not superior - just better able to dominate because of what nature gave us. Nature did not give us the right to cause pain and fear.

I totally support your campaign!! The courts MUST be allowed to give a sentence to fit the crime! A 6mth sentance is nothing! and the only do half!! I think a bigger sentance, a large fine and communitee poop-scooping! ( I know shouldn’t be nessessary but it is!)

I totally back this campaign, it’s about time the powers that be who can punish these people did so with appropriate sentences rather than a little slap on the wrist!!! How would they like what these evil people do to animals done to them especially if they didn’t have a voice to tell anyone!!!!!

I wholeheartedly back this campaign. How can anyone get away with killing or torturing an animal, I don’t know. If it was done to a human being, they would get life. And if you think of it, we are animals too. So why one rule for one and another rule for the other. Just because beasts don’t have as big a brain than us, doesn’t make them inferior. Do to the abusers what they do to the abused. Then see what happens. I feel soooo strongly about this. I wish I could get my hands on them!!!!!

I fully support this campaign, this news made me cry at work. If you are an animal abuser, how does a ban on keeping animals affect your life? So what, are you going to stick to it? How is it monitored? There is almost no change to the abusers life, a prison sentence is far more inconvinient to an animal abuser.
Unfortunately until our governmant makes much tougher sentencing on rape and murder and without parole, animal absuers are unfortunately way down on their list of importance.
Please, whoever has the power, have the courage to make some real changes, take this opportunity.

It is with deep regret i have had to read the many cruelty articles about animal cruelty.
Time and time again, we hear about such horrific abuse, on poor defenceless animals.
One article i read about in the papers earlier this year, and it still haunts me every day, was about the poor staffordshire dog TAMMY who the police did take away from the owner for abuse, and the RSPCA also had to give the dog back, after a judge over ruled the RSPCA, a year later they found the animal so badly traumatised and abused they had to put the dog to sleep.
Studies all around the world state that these HORRIBLE people will again go on to abuse animals, and yet we give them a ban for 5 to 10 years, THESE PEOPLE NEED PUNISHMENT IN PRISON, and BANNED FOR LIFE… i would like to see the law changed now, not when its too late.

its about time animals had the laws full protection - they are ‘ people ‘ , not possessions, and therefore the charge sheets for these cruel people should read ‘ murder ‘ and not ‘ animal cruelty ‘ - a sadist is as a sadist does, and we need to fully protect the innocent and vulnerable in our society - all violent crimes should carry much heavier penalties

It makes me sick to my stomach to hear of these crimes.I get angry and so frustrated at hearing they only get fines or a ban on keeping animals.Even if they were banned for the rest of their lives it wont change who they are inside and what they are capable of.Whats to stop them harming animals that dont belong to them? THERE IS NO JUSTICE IN THIS WORLD!!!
Reply
I think animal abusers should face much tougher sentences, e.g. longer jail terms and higher fines. I also think anyone who commits a deliberate act of cruelty should face an automatic lifetime ban on keeping any animal. I think banning them from only keeping certain species, or for only a few years, is a waste of time.
Reply
I fully support this campaign. Sentencing for serious animal abuse needs to be very much harsher. It seems the court system gives tougher sentences where money is involved, where people or animals are the victims the courts don’t seem to care. It is long overdue that this be changed.

i cannot help but agree that the sentences [when/if any] do not seem to fit the crimes; far stronger measures, not only to deter such dreadful cruelty, but to PROTECT the general public, seem to me to be needed.
there is a well-known link between animal abuse & domestic violence, animal cruelty & violent crimes against people; to ignore the link from animal-victim violence, injury or death to humans, is foolhardy.
youths & juveniles who abuse animals, in particular, need intervention to change those behaviors =before!= they reach adulthood.
if we cannot deter or prevent, then punishment which removes the abuser from society, coupled to rehabilitation so that they do not re-offend after release, is the only safe response.

Totally support tougher penalties. Animal cruelty should be treated in the same manner as if the abuse was to a human. Once convicted the person should never again be allowed to own or look after an animal.
Reply
I would support your campaign for tougher sentences for animal abusers. Our laws should at least equal those in the USA. Our laws are too soft and no deterrant to those who commit such despicable acts.
If they commit cruelty to an animal what would they do to a adult or defenceless child.
Let the punishment fit the crime.

I am involved i n the world of animal welfare (Greyhounds in particular) and it never ceases to horrify my how mankind can come up with more and more ways to torture, maim and kill their pets.
Sentences should reflect the crime, stopping people from owning animals is totally useless, there is no way this can be monitored.
Jail and enforced, supervised work with animals as well as heavy fines and reduction of any government benefits received in my opinion is the way forward.

i think people should get a big sentence if found guilty of animal cruelty, it makes me sick to read what some poor animals go through because of someones sick head, plz plz lets try to get these sickos the punishment they need , i think myself these people should get years inside for this cruelty and not months.
Reply
Myself + husband wholey heartedly support this campaign please lets see something done about this cruelty and persons responsible for it NOW not in 5 years time. Its gone on long enough and will continue until longer jail time is enforced and to serve the full sentencing for their dispicable acts on innocent animals
Reply
It’s time the punishment fit the crime. Harsher sentences will not stop animal abuse but it may make some of the perpetrators stop and think and perhaps even change their minds about abusing. If it stops only one person then at least thats one victim saved!!!!!
Reply
The fact that people can commit such atrocities and unspeakable acts against animals , and a fraudster who just got greedy get the same sentance is most certainly worrying . Its the same with paedophiles the justice system is failing animals and children who are the most vulnerable. The goverment has got to see that people who enjoy torturing animals to death are most likely to move on to commit violent murders later on. If you murder an animal the penalty should be the same as if you murder a human.
Reply
I support any campaign that works for tougher penalties for animal abusers. It’s unbelievable what people can get away with when the victim is an animal…..unbelievable, disgusting, and obscene.
Reply
I fully support your cause. The punishment for animal abuse in this country is way too lenient. The courts must be given more power to impose much stricter sentences and heavier fines

I absolutely support tougher laws. Over the summer, there was a case in Des Moines IA about a family whose dog was found in their yard hung in their tree like a condemned man, because apparently it barked at a passerby too much. The person who did it has yet to be caught. The dog, meantime, has had to undergo surgery to correct problems with his trachea. It’s a known fact that crimes against animals are just the first step in the progression to eventually harming or even killing a human being. God gave mankind dominion over the creatures of the earth, but He does not condone the willfull torture and slaughter of His creatures, human or animal. If we don’t protect these creatures, who will?

Tougher sentencing for animal cruelty is long overdue. I FULLY support this campaign.

I do not live in the UK. but in the US. But still i believe that animal cruelty sentencing should be taken just as if they murdered a human. Animals have feelings just as we, and for someone to be sick enough to hurt them and leave them to suffer is just immorral! If someone can hurt a small creature whos to say that they wont someday tourture a child or another human being. so there for im totally for a tougher sentence in animal cruelty!
Reply
I wholeheartedly support your campaign for harsh sentences for animal abusers.
Reply
ILOVE that you started this campaign!! I support you 100% too. People who commit these heinous crimes against animals need to be “abused” in the same manner as they abuse the animals! If criminals KNEW they were going to have the same thing(s) done to them that they do to ANY animal, this kind of “behavoir” would almost cease to exist!! Jail time and monetary fines are CLEARLY not enough! It obviously doesn’t work, and we are wasting tax payer’s money by housing and feeding them!! Passing stronger legislation won’t work either, if law enforcement won’t ENFORCE the laws!

Animals to me are just like humans. They have feelings. If you punch one, it’s like punching a person, they cry they feel. People don’t understand that.
I have 2 dogs and 1 cat. I love them more than anything in the world and if someone were to hurt them in any way I would be willing to get in trouble for them. I love animals more than humans to be completely honest with you.
If you kill a dog, you out to get the same time you would if you had killed a person. Like someone said up there, animal abuse and killings can lead up to the person becoming a serial killer, it has in a lot of cases.
I don’t understand why it’s socially acceptable to kill animals, but not humans? I’m not for killing humans, but seriously. People put kittens in microwaves to see what happens to them, how would they feel if someone put their baby in the microwave for the same reason?
People need to know it’s not alright to kill animals, and they need to start doing background searches on people who want to adopt or purchase an animal, just like they do with people who want to adopt a child.
In Texas and California they want to terminate all pitbulls because of attacks and problems they have had with them. Very rarely does a dog have an aggressive temperment naturally. 9 times out of 10 when a dog attacks someone it is scared, since it’s so used to be beaten by it’s owners. They are defending themselves and they don’t know better. My 2 dogs I adopted and both were abused. They are the sweetest dogs ever, and I just don’t understand how someone could hurt such loving creatures. I just wish that people who do these horrible things would suffer for what they did. They need to. 6 months max. , a fine, and not being able to own an animal for 5 years isn’t anything. They will go back to be sick freaks and doing it again most likely, and hey they might move on to humans next.

We humans have made a right mess of this planet. Our problem is that we are at the top of the tree of earth’s evolution. There is no one above us, unless, of course, we believe in God. So, we ought to behave responsibly and self regulate… but do we - Hell! To my mind, there is absolutely no excuse for cruelty, even in ignorance. If only our ’system’ could enable appropriate retribution for our misdeeds towards other living beings - just as we do for our ‘brother’ beings: there would be a much reduced cruelty toll. Our pets - our friends, deserve much better consideration. Remember, for example our dogs are 100% dependent on us for everything - food, accommodation and love. Our pets need our care and leadership on a 24/7 basis. If we cannot do this we should review our position of ‘ownership’. Our pets should be as precious to us as our children.
Clearly, we need to eradicate genuine pests, but this activity also can be performed humanely. So, what is our problem? For most of us, it goes without saying: … but for the small minority of ’sick’ people we need harsher deterrents. There should be NO excuse for cruelty.
I believe in the humane use of e-collars to give our dogs freedom from the leash and a quality of life enjoyed by only a few, but paramount to anything else is my desire for justice for those with whom we share this planet. We only live once… and so do they!

Yes - definitely far tougher punishment should be used for animal cruelty as at the moment the feeble bans ,fines and miniscule sentences are hardly a deterrant. But - what is anyone going to DO about it? Where do we go from here? We’re all agreeing something should be done but WHAT? Shouldnt we be using this collection of shared opinion to contact an MP or something? And I dont mean another petition that can be ignored - Id really like to be a part of this change as it is immoral to sit back while this sickening torture continues.

I know this is now a year ago but I am wondering what was the outcome.

Its not the courts that need to do something , they can only act from the available sentencing which was enacted when the legislation was made, as such its he law that needs changing to permit harsher and more effective sentencing.

Sandra please inorm your legal team that this isnt the first time Merseyside POlice have acted cruelly towards dogs in their care, in 1994 they had a dog in their care at the kennels in St Anne Street , no one bothered to even look that it had food and water, the dog was found dead 3 weeks later . No Police Officer was even investigated!!!

People who hurt and abuse animals should in my opinion have done to them what they have done to the poor defenceless animal but as our law stands we cant do that because of what they call human rights but i say what about the ANIMALS RIGHTS.They say some people are band from having but you cant find a listing of these people as i found out after my cat had kittens i was told it couldnt be disclosed because its against human rights to disclose such details so whats the point of the ban. i also believe that if all children were shown how to love and respect all animals next generation of adults wouldnt have these crule tendency

We are fighting for a change in law - Animal cruelty is unacceptable - Can you imagine that we have to ASK the government to do this? This is the RIGHT of every ANIMAL.

I fully agree with you. Animal abusers should be punished a lot more than what they receive. No animal deserves this kind of hurt!

Seriously what do we need to do to get harsher punishments for these dirtbags????? I am tired of them paying a stupid little fine and serving NO or very little jail time. They should be held accountable for their actions!! Animals CANNOT protect themselves and that is why these WEAK, POOR EXCUSES of human beings do what they do! I WANT SERIOUS JAIL TIME FOR THESE PEOPLE IN GENERAL POPULATION. I want them to feel every bit of fear, pain and confusion that these poor animals felt. I do believe that it is time that they pay for what they do. A fine is nothing! They pay it only to go on to abuse more and more animals. How many animals do we NOT know about??

I support your campaign wholeheartedly!
I think that Court /judicial resources, police time and tax payers money should be directed towards handing out justice to these cowardly criminals instead of the tragedy that is the Dangerous Dogs Act. Lets punish THESE deeds!

I wholy support any campaign to give harsher sentencing to those who inflict physical or mental torture to any animals not just dogs.
a life for a life whether it be canine, feline or human!

I wish that we had your support in South Africa where most often people who commit horrendous animal abuse just get lost in the system. Our country is so full of violent crime against people that the animals get left behind!

Most definately animal abusers should get stiffer sentences in fact there are two things I have in mind one is do the same to the abuser as he does to the animal and the other is treat these animal abusers as they treat child abusers as there is no difference at all an animal feels pain and fear just like humans do. The law in the UK is an ass as far as animals are concerned the government just don’t seem to care. Take a case recently that evil Gray man from Spindles Farm who left horses and donkeys to die of desease and starvation he gets 6 months prison sentence then is out within 4 days on appeal that is a disgrace. If an animal is killed it is MURDER and the murderer should get a sentence accordingly LIFE and when I say life I mean LIFE as it should be for killing a human. If I had my way I would bring back hanging as anyone who kills should not have a life.
