Is The Kennel Club About to be Taken Over?
Writing his (excellent) column on The Telegraph website today, high profile veterinarian Pete Wedderburn asks the question; Is a take-over of the Kennel Club imminent? The Kennel Club has been under the kosh for some time now but the pressure really grew following the airing of documentary Pedigree Dogs Exposed – which has now been seen around the world.
As the dog world gears up for the launch of the much-anticipated Bateson report there is a palpable air of fear and downright panic coming from some of the extremist elements of the competitive dog breeding world, those for whom change proposed by anyone other than their own clique is seen as ‘outsiders poking their noses in where it’s not welcome’.
Mr Weddeburn writes:
The dog breeding world is under pressure. Following the BBC’s “Pedigree Dogs Exposed” documentary, accusing fingers were pointed at those involved in producing pedigree puppies. In the aftermath, two independent inquiries were set up. The first one reported a couple of months ago; the second is due to issue its report next Thursday.
The two inquiries have exchanged information so that they will complement each other. There have been hints that tighter government control of the production of both pedigree and non-pedigree dogs may result, so those involved with dog breeding are awaiting the final report’s conclusions and recommendations with some trepidation.
