Complete Ban on Tail Docking Moves Closer

With the news that the Scottish Parliament has voted to ban all tail-docking of dogs, it seems the UK is moving ever closer to a complete ban on tail docking sooner rather than later.

As things stand the laws on tail docking are less than clear to the ‘average dog owner’.

It’s clear that dogs which are traditionally docked are still being docked. Rottweilers, Dobermann’s and more are seen as often without a tail as with (we’re talking about young dogs here, not older dogs who would not have been subject to recent anti-docking legislation)

So where are we headed?

Is it time for the Goverment to simply issue a complete ban on the docking of all non-working dogs or do you feel the Government is poking its nose where it is not needed? Let the world know your feelings, comment on this post below:

Scotland is light years ahead of the rest of the world with its wonderful animal welfare folks. Thanks for helping to raise the bar, and keeping up the tough work.

I have no problem with tail docking since it is done at such a young age- a little squeek while they are being held, and then right back to mom’s milk. I only have a problem with ear cropping because it is done later, when nerve endings are intact and so few people can do it correctly.

    what about dew claws?

a lot more painful but still allowed to be done.

ok docking the ears I think needs to be looked at before the tails! Docking ears is useless and unnessary! At least docking tails there’s a good result!! I raise/breed Rottweilers and yes I dock tails and remove dew claws (useless things(dews)). I do feel bad for the pups when I have it done but the claws are useless and can cause more problems tearing them off and missed during clippings will grow into their feet. Tails I hate those big long whips! Not so bad if they are curly tails but still they hurt! And they knock things over and the dogs gets in trouble for it, they can’t control those whips! I will still dock my pups tails (I might have a litter on the way & will be docked). Besides those little nubs are so cute when they are going a mile a minute you can’t even hardly see it, it’s moving so fast. I think removeing due claws is less painful than tails! The pups scream more about their tails then their toes.

ive been owning a rottie for the last four years now,it has his tail docked,is the most lovably dog ive ever had,and i cant imagine a rottwieler with a tail,i think they dindt look the same, and i know people here in malta ,that are losing all the interest in this breed bec of this stupid law made by a bunch of peaple that want to decide for others,

jen perhaps you should breed little pooches instead, then your finest crockery wont be whipped off the table!

rspca studies have shown that a pup will shreik up to 42 times after having a big part of its spine lopped off!
dogs can develop bowel and bladder missfunctions due to muscle problems. and also hernias.
puppies nerves ARE formed at 4 days old( you should hear my pups when thier mum sits on them!). of course they are as pain is for the pups own protection.
it seems really strange to me considering the care and attention i give my pups to avoid them suffering any pain that a supposed responsible breeder would feel it morally right to remove a portion of thier animals babies spines.
its giving me chills just thinking about it.
if people are going off rotties because of thier tails, they are obviously just after a dog that looks intimidating. i own american bulldogs. you dont need to cut bits off them to improve thier look. evolution tends to know better but i suppose some cant help but play god.

    If you link to
and other pages you will find information, reports and comments on the reasons why docking should not be done.
