Ahh Christmas. It’s the most wonderful time of the year in the world, so the song goes. Bells, holly, mistletoe and wine. A time to be merry and enjoy the fun. However, as we now live in a consumer-driven world where everybody already owns just about everything they want to own, picking a perfect festive gift is harder to do than ever. Which is why so many people turn to the gift-wrapped puppy as a way to win the affections of the family. Here is K9 Magazine’s guide to giving or receiving a dog at Christmas…..

Step 1)

DON’T!

Muppet.

Just don’t.

Do we need to explain why? Still?

Still tempted? Still thinking about it?

OK, we understand – you’re in that ’special’ demographic that has a head full of cloth rather than brains.

In which case, here is your guide to getting a dog at Christmas….

Step 1) Be aware that Christmas puppies are poisonous. Yes, it’s true. If you acquire a puppy to be given as a Christmas gift you are, sadly, going to discover the nasty, murky secret – your legs will fall off and your tongue will turn to rust. Your house will instantly take the form of a Kellog’s Cornflakes box and your nose will drop off.

Yes, yes, it might sound like a far-flung fairy story without any credibility or logic, but you started it, you were the one who wanted to buy a puppy as a Christmas gift, remember!!

If you really want to get a dog, wait until the Christmas hullabaloo has died down, go visit your nearest rescue shelter and speak to the staff there. You might just find some new arrivals on their way there, dogs who were purchased as Christmas gifts by people who’ve got less intelligence and reason than a brass door knocker.

[If you know someone who's thinking of getting a Christmas puppy, please feel free to forward this to them - presuming they understand how to turn on an actual computer rather than staring at the microwave shuffling an egg timer around the worktop wondering why they can't access Google!]
