English bull terrier Paddy defied the odds when she survived emergency surgery to remove a swallowed Kinder egg surprise – despite an existing heart condition. Brave Paddy, who is ten-years-old, has heart disease and needs daily life-saving medication. So when she was brought into Stoke PDSA PetAid hospital after becoming seriously ill her owner Sandra Garner immediately feared the worst:

“Despite her condition, Paddy is an extremely happy and contented dog,” said Sandra. “Recently we noticed she wasn’t eating or drinking anything but thought it was nothing to worry about. But then she started to become sick, lost weight and became really ill. Because of her medical history we thought it was all linked.

Sandra (47) rushed Paddy to Stoke PDSA PetAid hospital where PDSA vets x-rayed her. This revealed she had swallowed a plastic Kinder egg surprise. She was taken immediately into theatre to remove the toy from her intestines.

PDSA Senior Veterinary Surgeon Duncan Senior said: “It was a race against time. We had to operate on Paddy straight away as she was extremely ill from the foreign object which had lodged in the small intestine. This was compounded by her underlying heart condition. Yet carrying out major surgery on a dog with heart failure also carries great risk as this could have put further strain on her heart. She could have died on the operating table.”

It was touch-and-go for Paddy in theatre as Duncan and his team battled to save her life but luckily Paddy came through the operation. Her recovery was long and slow but she has since bounced back from her ordeal.

Sandra said: “We were so shocked when the vet told us that this had been caused by a Kinder egg surprise! It was a huge relief as we thought it would be something more serious such as a tumour. The worst case scenario was that her condition had deteriorated so much that there was nothing more that the vets could do for her.

“All kinds of thoughts run through your mind but the staff at the PDSA in Stoke could not have been more supportive. I’m so grateful that they are there and that I can turn to them when I need to.”

Duncan Senior added: “All of the staff know Paddy well through her regular visits to the PetAid hospital and we’ve all been amazed by her resilience and recovery. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters we can continue to treat pets like Paddy.”

Stoke PDSA PetAid hospital provides free veterinary care to the sick and injured pets of owners in need. For further information about PDSA PetAid services and on how to donate please visit www.pdsa.org.uk.
