K9 Magazine’s own cover star Cesar Millan launched his first online National Spokesdog Competition in early September. Anyone could enter their dog by uploading a memorable photo and describing why their dog should win. The Grand Prize is a starring role next to Cesar in the Millan Foundation’s 2010 spay and neuter PSA campaign. By the end of the competition on Halloween night, over 3,000 dogs had been entered and more than $35,000 was raised for the Cesar and Ilusion Millan Foundation.

With the help of a nicely cast group of celebrity judges that included The Biggest Loser’s Jillian Michaels, producer Barry Josephson, model and actress Linda Blair, drummer Matt Sorum and even Scooby-Doo (with some help from his best friend Shaggy), the National Spokesdog Competition now has a Grand Prize Winner: Jake, a mixed breed adopted from an Orange County, California shelter.

Jake definitely stands out. He has a scar that runs the entire circumference of his muzzle, due to having it wired shut by an animal abuser. His new adoptive mom, Robin Feiger, says, “He was obviously abused, yet it has not affected his spirit. He is still a favorite with everyone he meets. He is a very gentle soul.”

“We set out to create a contest that would highlight the love we have for our canine companions while at the same time addressing the most serious crisis facing animals in shelters today, that’s overpopulation,” states Cesar. “Jake is a perfect representation of the wonderful companions found in shelters.”

Three finalists also won in the categories of Best Pack, Most Outrageous Feat, Best Camera Face, and Most Hilarious Costume. Each category winner will receive a shopping spree at Petco, along with a gift card to CesarsWay.com, and Cesar’s autographed Common Canine Misbehaviors DVD. All winning entries are listed at www.nationalspokesdog.org.

Dog behavior specialist Cesar Millan is best known for his hit television series Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan on National Geographic Channel. The Cesar and Ilusion Millan Foundation promotes the adoption of abused and abandoned dogs at shelters and rescue organizations. The foundation also provides direct funding for spaying and neutering programs and the humane education of children. For more information, visit MillanFoundation.org.
