Kit Malthouse’s Anti Bull Breed Agenda is Squashed (By His Own Boss!)
Dog owners – especially owners of bull breeds – can breathe a big sigh of relief today as London mayor Boris Johnson swatted away proposals from the deputy mayor of policing to wipe out bull breeds from the UK.
Malthouse drew mass criticism for his ignorant stance on dangerous dogs, saying:
Bull terriers were bred as weapons, to duel or bait with, for their owner’s entertainment and status, and only once we recognise their atavistic instincts, as those who train them to fight do, can we start to frame legislation that may have a lasting effect.
As well as punishing owners appropriately for use of this weapon, we should be bolder about removing it from circulation altogether.
But it seems he lacked support – as well as judgement – as London mayor Boris Johnson failed to back his plans saying the last thing he wanted to see was “harmless pooches being slaughtered.”
Malthouse also drew a blank with his colleague Roger Evans, who said:
“I’m not in favour of banning things – deprived of ‘status’ dogs, the owners would just find another way to make a nuisance of themselves. We need legislation which targets those few antisocial individuals and removes them from circulation.”
Malthouse had caused outrage by suggesting that the UK should follow the model of Ontario Canada, revealing his ignorance of the situation by saying:
In Ontario, that is what has happened. The provincial government produced a law that banned all bull breeds and derivatives, including pitbulls and the Staffordshire bull terrier. All such existing dogs had to be registered, neutered and muzzled, leading to the bull-types dying out and owners learning to love the labrador or pug.
As the Conservative party works to position itself as a less interfering, less ‘nanny state’ loving party of power, Malthouse advising dog owners which breeds they ought to ‘learn to love’ having killed off the beautiful, unique breeds such as the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Bull Dog, Bull Terrier, Bull Mastiff (and the other bull breeds he so broadly condemned) is sure to reflect badly on his political and social judgement.
In fact, his comments provoked reaction around the world and it would seem he’s found himself completely isolated and embarrassed at the complete lack of backing.
A Conservative party blog reports:
For some reason Kit Malthouse did not sit in his chair during the session but instead watched the exchange from the gallery.
It is not yet known whether he was wearing any special headwear.

Dunce – lol
What silly things to suggest, jeez what a cock up, unreal, he should be sacked from the London Assembly, Londoners deserve better!
Bravo for Boris!! This is great news indeed!
Many thanks indeed for all your efforts at K9.
Especially in the latest matter re/ Kit Malthouse.
Truly making a difference in the canine world.
I have just received your latest press release on this matter.
Special thanks too for your brilliant write up for Maria Daines
who works so hard for all the animals.
My Regards & Respects. John. TRM. UK.
Glad his boss has more common sense than Malthouse does. I heard the mayor recently scared off a couple of would be muggers. I wonder if Malthouse was curious to know if the attackers were using Bull Terriers as weapons at the time? Really Kit Malthouse is five years too late if it’s easy self publicity he’s after – that ship has sailed. People aren’t buying into the whole dangerous breeds idea as readily as they used to, even if there’s still a way to go for those slower leaners. More are asking we put higher emphasis on owners drawn to these breeds in recent years. It would behoove Malthouse to pay more attention to what’s going on before making an international clown of himself next time.
A big THANKYOU to Boris Johnson, Roger Evans & all the sane human beings who saw the sense not to back the heartless village idiot! You have restored a little of my faith in politicians, now sack him & get someone who bothers to research problems before suggesting such rediculous solutions and you would probably get the votes of the majority of dog lovers in the UK!
We are so lucky to have you Ryan O’Meara. Without K9 Mag we wouldn’t have half a clue about wallies like these getting into positions of potential power to further ruin our lives and in this case an attempt to deprive us of our precious bully breeds!!
What is the matter with the likes of Malthouse? Are they dog-haters? Control freaks? Some weird agenda like Ingrid Newkirk of PETA or Wayne Pacelle of HSUS? Or just plain brain dead and ignorant?
For 15000 years we have benefited massively from having the dog in our lives. We OWE them their safe future in our care.
Malthouse and his ilk well underestimate our loyalty to our dogs and how they threaten their own political survival when they threaten the survival of our domestic dogs.
