Question of the Day: Is London’s Deputy Mayor For Policing The Biggest Moron in Britain?

I think I ought to get straight to the point and answer my own question.

Yes, yes he is.

Kit Malthouse, writing in The Times newspaper has parroted, almost word for word, the rhetoric and mistruths spewed up by former Home Secretary Ken Baker in calling for a ‘gentle phasing out’ of ‘weapon dogs’.If ever you needed evidence that the ’status dog’ message was going to cause more harm than good (as we have often repeated on these pages) then today, we have it.

The RSPCA has a ’status dog’ campaign running at the moment. I know this, because they send me emails asking for donations to help with the ’status dog’ problem.

Still, to this day, nobody has EVER been able to give me a legal or even a loose definition of what a ’status dog’ actually is, but let’s move on from that little oversight to the rantings of Malthouse – who is also a member of the London Assembly.

In his Times piece, he writes:

certain types of dogs are inherently more aggressive than other. At the top of the list are bull breeds, developed for one purpose: to attack and fight.

Bull terriers were bred as weapons, to duel or bait with, for their owner’s entertainment and status, and only once we recognise their atavistic instincts, as those who train them to fight do, can we start to frame legislation that may have a lasting effect. As well as punishing owners appropriately for use of this weapon, we should be bolder about removing it from circulation altogether.

I have emphasised the last line and I’m sure it will send a chill down the spine.

What, exactly, is he proposing?

We already HAVE breed specific legislation! We have the law that his equally ignorant partner in bull breed prejudice implemented in 1991. How can it be that we’ve had a law for nearly 20 years that was designed to do EXACTLY what these two are calling for, and yet the ’status dog problem’ is, we are told, bigger than ever?

The irony seeping out of the entire article is pungent. But it gets worse, much worse.

In Ontario, that is what has happened. The provincial government produced a law that banned all bull breeds and derivatives, including pitbulls and the Staffordshire bull terrier. All such existing dogs had to be registered, neutered and muzzled, leading to the bull-types dying out and owners learning to love the labrador or pug. The result? A huge fall in the number of dog-related injuries and incidents. This approach manages to be both humane to those who have a dog of this type and draws a line under the problem.

Serious penalties will make dog owners think twice, but surely it is time for us to look to our Commonwealth cousins and find a way gently to phase out the canine weapons that terrorise the streets of Peckham, Toxteth and Moss Side.

You may have noticed, Mr Malthouse is actually calling for a ‘gentle phasing out’ (which means killing, by the way – gentle phasing out sounds better, but it means killing) of  bull breeds.

If you own a bull breed ‘or derivative’ I can imagine how your feeling right now.

But don’t worry, you can just ‘learn to love the Labrador or the Pug’.

Yes, here is a man who is clearly in touch, who clearly understands how to ‘fix’ the problem of irresponsible dog ownership – it involves ‘gentle phasing out’. That’s his final solution.

But let’s have a look at the height of his ill informed idiocy.

The provincial government produced a law that banned all bull breeds and derivatives, including pitbulls and the Staffordshire bull terrier. All such existing dogs had to be registered, neutered and muzzled, leading to the bull-types dying out and owners learning to love the labrador or pug.

The above is categorically untrue. Absolutely categorically not true. Don’t believe me? Well speak to anyone in Ontario about how well their breed ban is working out and ask anyone who had their dog taken and killed if they’ve, instead ‘learned to love the Labrador or Pug’ instead. (I’m not even TOUCHING the health issues related to a Pug, they’d be wasted on this guy.)

The process he’s described is the exact process we implemented in 1991. It’s BSL. And yet here we are, moaning about the rise in ‘weapon dogs’.

When will these people realise that the definition of madness is to do the same things over and over and expect a different result?

Want a further insight in to his thinking? Read this:

Clearly, owners are part of the solution: they are in possession of a weapon and should be treated as such

Yes, you read that correctly. Owners are only ‘part’ of the solution, this final solution for bull breeds.

Wrong.

Owners are ALL of the solution.

Dogs, all of them, are the product of their upbringing and environment.

Now, let’s examine some stats shall we:

Cadey-Lee Deacon: Killed by her grandparent’s dogs at her grandparent’s home (Rottweiler)

Ellie Lawrenson: Killed by her uncle’s dog whilst at her grandparent’s home  in care of grandmother (Pit Bull)

Archie-Lee Hirst: Killed by his grandparent’s dog whilst in the care of a young babysitter (Rottweiler)

Jaden Mack: Killed by his grandmother’s dogs whilst in care of grandmother who was asleep (Staffie and Jack Russell)

Now, remind me – which of these dogs are the ‘weapon’ dogs terrorising our city streets.

These are the dogs on the fatality list. Fatalities caused by dogs occur, almost without single exception, in the family home and tend to be carried out by dogs belonging to the family of the person (usually a child) who is killed.

There is a pattern to fatal dog attacks (have a read of the stats I’ve just posted, even a moronic legislator should be able to spot the pattern).

Malthouse opened his piece by citing The RSPCA:

The RSPCA says its hospitals are “full to the brim” with weapon dogs

Weapon dogs?

Could we do a BETTER job of ‘branding’ these dogs, because, you know, I think there’s still one or two of the thuglife on the street who haven’t heard yet.

Let’s call them; ‘Pyscho dogs’ – ‘Street killa’ – ‘Nike dogs’ – ‘Thugz dogz’ – ‘Beast dogz’.

Because the ONLY job being done with ignorant, ill informed and, frankly, despicable statements like this is creating a DEMAND for the dog from the very people they’re moaning about.

Previously, I wrote ‘What does Alice Cooper and the Dangerous Dogs Act Have in Common?’

By banning something, by whipping up a frenzy about it, by ‘branding’ it, you create a DEMAND for it from the exact demographic you are complaining about.

The history of the world teaches us lessons in this respect.

When you get a locality which becomes a hotspot for suicides, the media coverage and ‘hype’ adds to the problem. We know this to be true.

When you give certain media coverage to the types of teens who enter schools and take lives, it adds to the problem. We know this be true.

When you stick a label on a record ‘Parental Discretion is Advised’ you may as well have done the marketing yourself, to the demographic who you are trying to ’shield’.

When we spit up a frenzy about ‘weapon dogs’ you are, I guarantee, whetting the appetite for these breeds by the demographic who are responsible for the suffering.

Ignorance may be bliss, but it leads to an exacerbation of the problem.

These labels don’t help. They hinder.

Let’s remind ourselves of some definitive facts:

Cruelty to animals is a crime.
Deliberately intimidating people (with dog or without) is a crime.

So, how about this for a radical idea – if you catch someone being cruel to a dog, you prosecute them under the laws that were put in place for that crime. If you catch someone deliberately intimidating people (with a dog or without) then you prosecute them under the laws that apply. Simply going on ANOTHER dog killing spree will not only fail to resolve the problem, it will spell disaster, resentment and any of the many THOUSANDS of responsible owners of beautiful bull breeds whom Matlhouse would like to ‘gently phase out’, you might want to contact him and let him know your opinion on whether you should be forced to ‘learn to love the Labrador or Pug’.

It is already a crime to do what these youths are being accused of.

A continuation of the failed policies of the Baker government will spell yet more failure.

That there are people who hold these views and happen to have a position of power, makes me – genuinely – ashamed to share the same planet as them, let alone the same country.

I intend writing to Kit Malthouse and including the link to this editorial. I doubt he will read it because he is so ignorant he is unlikely to be educated by the truthful information you have included here, but we must try and keep on trying. What else can we do in the face of hysterical media sensationalism and uneducated political menace towards dogs in the UK today.

Thank you for getting to the heart of the matter but above all, thank you for offering your experienced and informed narrative to the general public, which clearly shows the true picture of BSL and the ‘Dangerous’ Dogs Act in Britain today.

I wonder how many more innocent dogs will be killed because nobody is listening to expert advice? I wonder how many more dogs will end up leading hopelessly inadaquate and miserable lives as tools for the horrific dog fighting agenda cultivated by criminals?

I wonder when British politics will grow up?

I wonder, when will it become a mandatory requirement for all dog owners to sit a test to prove their intentions towards their dependent animal and demonstrate their ability to be a responsible citizen able to care for a dog of any breed?

I wonder why the UK is always looking the other way when stupid laws are introduced which will not solve a problem, but rather ‘create’ many more.

I am yet again exasperated by the sad state of affairs and the unspeakable wrath brought forth by ill informed politicans who exert their taste for authority by introducing warped legislation that affects dogs detrimentally by ending their lives on a daily basis. Dogs, yes, man’s ’so called’ best friend, the same dogs who are callously demonised by those that should know better, by those who reside in the lofty chambers of high society and preside over the rest of us as though they are playing God without compassion.

Well said Maria and Ryan. I cannot believe the rubbish that Kit Malthouse has spurted. This all reinforces the fact that we need to speak out and support each individual animal, regardless of breed or appearance. Too often idiots in positions of “authority” get away with this. Look at what is (STILL!) happening with Bruce in Northern Ireland and what happened to Sam; who was “accidently” put to death by the Metropolitan Police. Keep the momentum going folks!

Maybe Mr Malthouse would like to join us on a tuesday or thursday at the coneygre dog training club in tipton west mid’s, run by 2 excellent teachers, sue & yvonne, where i train my border collies each week alongside Mia the american bulldog & several very clever & obedient staffies along with various other breeds of all shapes & sizes before he judges all bull breed dogs! let’s see what he’s got to say after he watches them practising for their KC good citizen gold awards which we will be doing in a few weeks time, or doing a little bit of scent work or a bit of agility work , then we can see if he is still has the same mis-guided opinions! If anything has to bring in a dog licence obtainable via a training course such as KC good citizen scheme for all dog owners, it would also give the youths we see on the streets something to compete for instead of who,s got the biggest dog – who’s got the most control over their dog.

Hmmm … “Removing it from circulation altogether” and “Gently phasing out” ring a bell. Weren’t similar phrases used by a certain Mr. Hitler in reference to Jews?!
This dangerous man obviously has no intention of accepting the fact that the responsibility solely falls on the owners, whatever the breed may be. Breed Specific Legislation does not, cannot, and never will work. All it has proven to do so far is destroy lives and break hearts, and yet this naiive and foolish man wants to make the situation a whole lot worse.
I have emailed him my thoughts for what they are worth.

Thank you for speaking out against such a shameful, despicable, outrageous desire by Mr. Kit Malthouse to eliminate what he terms ‘weapon dogs’. What about ‘weapon people’? The ones that create the problems that show no responsibility towards the right, decent treatment of animals? Has Mr. Kit Malthouse ever lived with a pit bull or any breed close to a pit bull? They are the sweetest most gentle breed. Kit Malthouse’s comments are akin to Nazi Germany’s attempt to wipe out all the Jews and others deemed not desirable to live. I think we have all had it with naive uninformed politicians and others making laws to outlaw magnificent gentle animals condemned to death by those that do not even know the dogs. It is time to deal with laws to stop people from abusing gentle animals, chaining them, and causing them to protect themselves in the only way they know best. We are now in the 21 century and yet when it comes to animals still in the dark ages with our treatment of animals. Shame on the lawmakers for missing the mark everytime – implement laws to demand responsibility towards living breathing beings.

Here I have a few issues, firstly I do not beleive BSL has anything to do with dogs, they are merely the victims similiar to the Jews in the 2nd WW.If one was to imagine Malthouse writing to his pal Gordon(Going to have an educated guess that he is a failing labourite)
    Dear Gordy,
We need urgently to bring in some laws that show our voters we care for them.My idea is too not go after the dog-fighter’s who we know are the drug-dealer’s,illegal gamblers and many more criminal activities and are Armed and Dangerous,WE JUST CANNOT BEAT THEM,but we will go after FAMILY PETS,this is easy and the VOTER’s will see how we care for them.

    Love,

    Malty.

p.s I will contact a few of our media friends that are on our payroll to run a few hyped up articles on these dogs, like Haigy did
on the Elly Lawrensen affair.HEIL HITLER.

For the record the Elly Lawrensen affair was Media Hype at its best or at it’s worst depending on which side of the table you are sitting.
I always will maintain there were 2 VICTIMS in that case, the little girl Elly and Reuben the 8 month old puppy that was being filled
with ANABOLIC STEROIDS by his owner an in and out of jail drug-dealer who enjoyed dog-fighting,this scumbag I think paid a 5 pound fine for his role in this sad incident. But it created the excuse for the neo-Nazis on the Merseyside police to go out and KILL many thousands of family pets, they also had no focus or BALLS to take on the Dog-fighting rings.

i have to agree with you. reuben did not become dangerous because of his breed, like the media first reported and would like us to believe.

other reports came out about this case. not only had the dog been given steroids, but was also kick, punched, abused and tormented by members of the family. he had also attack 2 people before and the owner knew and STIILL let the dog have full access to the child.

and quess what? she was found NOT guilty of manslaughter!

i wonder how many innocient pits or dogs that are unfortunate enough just to look like pits where put down when the police did a crack down on pits after this attack! that atcualy called it a aminsty for pits. NO it was an aminsty to those who owned them illegally, it only applied if they handed the dog over for distruction. if it was a amisty for pits it would have let them be placed on the exempted list.

You mention Ontario, there the Neo-Nazi who promoted BSL to advance his political career is no longer.Michael Bryant the one time Attorney -general who declared WAR on pitbulls Murdering thousands all in the name of politics.”LOOK VOTERS HOW WE PROTECT YOU FROM THOSE MARAUDING PITBULLS THAT ARE OUT TO GET YOU JUST READ IN THE ONTARIO POST HOW BAD THEY ARE” Well he no longer is the Attorney General and he is no longer interested in pitbulls he has a new target market the CYCLISTS,he apparently enjoys attacking them with his motor-vehicle.
He is up on Murder charges but he has got away with MURDERING thousands of FAMILY-PETS,I beleive he thinks he is above the law.
My advice “Cyclists Beware Bryant is on the Rampage.
The problem now although BSL was put in place for the wrong reason the current Liberal Government will not remove it as they will then have to admit they SCREWED-UP,so they will rather carry on MURDERING FAMILY PETS than lose a few VOTES.
This problem applies similarly to the UK,Northern Ireland,Miami-Dade County,Denver Colorada.

As any sane dog owner knows “any” dog will cause damage in not properly trained and socialised. Walking my two GSDs in our local woods the other day they were threatened by an out of control Border Terrier. Perhaps they should be added to the list! Of course, my two just looked at it in amazement!

In my opinion, it’s about time that the RSPCA stopped playing politics and got on with what most people think they are there for – detecting & preventing cruelty. They’d find it a lot easier if they spent a little more of the donations they receive in that area and put more inspectors out in the field. Following the recent incident of their destroying 10 GSDs with a captive bolt gun (without even offering them to a specialised recue for rehoming!) It would make more sense if they were the subject of a formal enquiry.

    BSL Does Not Work!

In 1989, Miami, Florida USA/Dade County passed an ordinance banning from the county all “pit bull” dogs. The county claimed that pit bulls were different from other dogs, that they inflicted injuries different from the injuries that a person might suffer from another dog, and that they posed a greater danger than other dogs.

The county claimed that the ban would keep the community safer by reducing the number of serious incidents involving dogs.

Has the Miami-Dade ban reduced the number of dog bites? Has it averted severe dog attacks? Has it eliminated dog bite-related fatalities?
Can the county even identify which dogs it has banned?

The answer to all these questions is, NO! There is no evidence that cities or counties, including Miami-Dade, that have enacted breed bans or restrictions have had a greater reduction in the number of reported bites than cities or counties without breed bans or restrictions.

BSL is Evil, and it doesn’t work. If you get a chance, watch the Dog Whisperer! There is nothing wrong with ANY Breed, only the people who raise & own them!

Perhaps, you should police yourself in the words you choose and the effect you have via your thoughts, words and actions on the universal resonance. Right now, your marks are very high on the scale of causing imbalance, frustration and continued ignorance. • Thank you for being frank and speaking out against this horror. It was only a matter of time before one country or another decided that it would be best just to “kill them all” and be done with it. This smacks so clearly of the holocaust – singling out any breed that is even mixed with a staffie/pit bull and then killing them in an attempt to eradicate them from the face of the planet. It’s actually frightening to think that anyone in power could make a broad-brushed determination like this and make it law to randomly to kill first and ask questions later. While I don’t live in the UK, things that happen there can give ideas to those in power in the USA and other countries.

BSL is a cancer. It’s eating away at the very fabric of families and a human being’s rights to choose the breed of companion animal they wish to share their lives with. Hearts are being broken around the globe from this horrible mental disease. And that’s what it is – a mental disease wherein someone has made up their mind that the LOOK of a dog automatically makes it evil and deserving of nothing more than brutal death. How did we get to this place? How did we as civilized people allow this cancer to continue to spread and metastasize to those dogs who even minutely resemble the breed, allowing families to be torn apart, millions of innocent animals murdered, all on our watch??

We have to fight this and fight it NOW before it spreads any further, most especially with this new proposal to just kill anything that closely resembles the breed without regard to the families or the animals. If we don’t end it now, it will continue to spread. Make no mistake, those of you out there with rotties, dobies, german shepherds and ANY breed of dog are not safe! Just because it’s the staffies today does not mean that it won’t be the others tomorrow. There is a list of 75 different dogs that have at one time or another been targeted by BSL, and you’d be shocked to see the breeds that are on it! It’s just that the pibbles have become so popular and such “status symbols” that they are more on the forefront than in years gone by. Before you know it, all of the staffies will have been wiped from the planet, and then who’s next? Trust me, it will NOT end here.

Unless and until the GUARDIANS are finally held responsible for their training of these precious animals, rather than blaming the dogs for something that is not their fault, this will not end. I read where a Lab PUPPY killed a baby in a swing. Will they be next? It’s the responsibility of the guardians to train their dogs and anyone with even an ounce of intelligence knows this. (And clearly this Ken Baker is missing any remnant of intelligence!) We must stand up and fight to have the GUARDIANS punished for the misdeeds of their dogs. We must stand up and fight to get the existing laws repealed before anything more is added to them. As I said, it’s like cancer, and cancers spread virulently once they take root.

I’m sickened by this. Every single day I read about another place that is proposing BSL. How can anyone look into the faces of the tiny puppies being killed every single day for no other reason than their bloodlines or their looks, and not be affected by it? How do these politicians sleep at night, knowing they have literally ripped hearts to bits day in and day out with the stroke of their pen?

Stand up and be counted people. There are enough of us to have a very loud and unified voice and we must USE those voices NOW before it’s too late. Even one more death is one too many, but we have to start somewhere. Dig in your heels, look into the eyes of whatever companion animals you have and promise them that you will fight this cancer with every ounce of your being until it has ended.

I was thinking along the same lines as Selwyn. Interesting that Kit Malthouse actually uses Ontario as an example of good politiking when the monster responsible for introducing breed specific legislation there, and who was more recently responsible for tougher laws against dangerous drivers, the man who said Pit Bulls had no place in a civilized society, who lied openly about 150 pound Pit Bulls attacking his neigbour’s children, is currently thinking about how he’s going to be defending himself in court when he’s standing trial for using his car as a weapon (an actual weapon, not an imaginary one) by ramming into a cyclist and killing him during late August. In other words, the reason for Micheal Bryant introducing breed specific legislation, had more to do with being “seen to be doing something” about a so called problem, than than it did about any genuine concern for the safety of Ontario’s public.

In a twisted way, it’s actually good that Malthouse has decided to target all bull breeds, because a lot of people don’t realize what a crock of bs breed specific legislation is, considering the media have been twisting the Pit Bull’s image into one of a monster for twenty years. But as soon other breeds start to become demonized in the same manner, those owners who previously tried to dissociate their breeds from the American Pit Bull Terrier, or the American Staffordshire, will be forced to except their beloved breed could be next. It’s something that owners of all larger, or athletic, or hunting breeds might want to consider. And the more breeds they lump into their so called dangerous dogs catergory, the more their silly ideas should loose favour with the average person.

Is Kit Malthouse the biggest moron in the UK? I had no idea who he was until I read this. But if I can make a judgement based on this article, I would say yes, he is indeed a very stupid man if this is how he wishes the public to see him.

    Quote Kit Malthouse.
“Clearly owners are part of the solution; they are in possession of a weapon and should be treated as such. But while welcome and vital, this would still miss an important point; certain types of dogs are inherently more aggressive than others.
At the top of the list are the bull breeds, developed for one purpose; to attack and fight. Bull terriers were bred as weapons, to duel or bait with, for their owners entertainment and status, and only once we recognise their atavistic instincts, as those who train them to fight do, can we start to frame legislation that may have a lasting effect. Quote TRM reality & Illusion.- BSL Witch Hunt.2009.

Witch Hunts are no basis for democratic procedure, and those who propose and pursue such backward thinking practices are indeed not fit to hold public office in any capacity whatsoever. Proposals for sweeping draconian measures will always end up persecuting the innocent and perpetuating injustice and suffering for many.
In reality those who think in such ways are no better than those in society who insist upon doing as they please and perpetuating lawlessness for their own ends.
As a parallel to Kit Malthouse ways of thinking one could illuminate much indeed.
    * Animal owners have now been classified as being in possession of a weapon and should be treated as such* whilst those with unbridled power utilise its purpose as an indiscriminate weapon designed to subjugate all & everyone who own bull breed dogs
    * Certain types of dogs are inherently more aggressive than others* which is no different to humans who are far more dangerous* whether they are those lawless types; or those in power who seek to implement draconian measures applied by force of law to intimidate the populace.
    * At the top of the list are the bull breeds developed for one purpose*
Here is where the rot sets in as it were, for here is where those lawless in society
As owners become aligned to responsible dog owners and those who respect and love animals as their friend’s and companions*
Here is where the Witch Hunt and the legislation appears to punish owners; guilty or not guilty; and to usher in The Final Solution *
Remember November * And never forget that those who made the greatest sacrifice; who fought against those very sinister forces that rear their ugly heads in this age.
This article is merely the tip of the iceberg in examining the decline of democracy in the free world; the negative shift in matters undermining freedom & liberty once again rears its sinister head from history past and is most dangerous to say the least.
Time for Change is most desirable in more ways than one to build a better world.
