Recently we told the tragic story of Sam, a Staffordshire bull terrier killed by mistake while in the “care” of the Metropolitan Police.

Sam died on 26th August 2009. However, his death could easily have been avoided if greater safeguards were in place. His case has highlighted a number of issues relating to seized dogs that must be dealt with to avoid further tragic deaths and a petition has now been set up to help draw attention to these issues.

PLEASE, PLEASE watch the video above.

The petition, hosted on the Care 2 website, asks for an overhaul of procedure in the main by demanding that where a dog is ordered to be destroyed by way of court order, no action will be taken without a written statement from the owners legal team stating no appeal has been nor will be heard.

Furthermore it requests that bodies of dogs that have died due to any cause, while in the care of the authorities are not routinely disposed of. Instead owners must be notified in writing of the dogs death and allowed the option to reclaim their dogs body and any other items such as collars, within 7 days of receipt of the written notice.

Finally that a “cooling off” period of seven days should apply to dogs whose owners have signed over for destruction. This will allow owners time to take legal advice and withdraw their consent for destruction if they so wish.

To sign the petition and help bring about safeguards to protect dogs held in the care of the authorities please

My heart goes out to all the responsible Pitbull/Staffordshire Terrier owners in the UK. I own a pitbull, now 10 years old – we live in Spain so she is safe from those who would judge her because of her breed. I feel honoured to have had so many happy years with my beautiful pitbull…she is loving, loyal, friendly to everyone, so well behaved and just great company. I will never return to England with her – she is so obviously not welcome in a country of so-called animal lovers. I thought Spain was a difficult country for animals, but now I’m having to change my opinion as my pitbull is certainly safer here than in the UK (never thought I’d say that).
Good luck to all those fighting for their dog’s survival and right to life.

our freedom and civil rights are being taken away all the time, government, bureaucracy making more unnecessary laws which do no good for the very people THEY are elected to SERVE, not we serve them. If we as a nation of British people allow these laws to be make taking away our rights and continue to sit back and not protest, lobby, MAKE A STAND by voicing our outrage, writing our disgust and complaint. Unite and stop this calculated manipulation of a our freedom and civil rights, rights which our father’s, grandfathers and generations of British people have fought wars against.
British people will continue to be treated like mindless Zombies by their government who eventually will control our thoughts, and our lives completely. I am not joking, where is the British courage, free thinking and voice of protest? Stop being lead by the nose to our doom, the story of Sam is just the tip of the iceberg, we are at fault we are letting these erosion of our basic right happen.

A once great nation who’s empire was admired can stand back and allow governments to kill a little dog who’s owners love him and he has done no wrong. It is disgraceful and sad to think we have blackened our families memory, those who fought to keep us safe from loosing our rights an freedom. Wake up Britains, smell the breath of fresh air, our country is great, beautiful, one which is known globally as an animal loving country, be the strong nation we once where and stop our government from taking any more rights away, stop there being any more Sam stories now before it is to late

Well said Pauline!! If only we would unite nationwide and speak up for a good cause instead of moaning and forgetting about things. The BSL situation cannot be allowed to continue, it is a ridiculous and dangerous piece of legislation that determines ‘guilt’ by ‘type’ therefore condemning many crossbreed dogs to death because they may ‘look’ like a banned breed. How stupid is that? And why are we allowing dogs to be killed because of this?

I fully support the petition to bring forth safeguards and protection for seized dogs whilst this law remains, however, the Dangerous Dog Act must ultimately be repealed if we are to find solutions that work fairly for people and dogs.

My comment on the petition -

Nothing can bring back this lovely friendly family dog but at least measures can be put in place to make sure such a tragic mistake does not, and is not, allowed to happen again. What the police and government do not realise is that a family dog is not ‘just’ a dog. Those who love their dogs as part of their family know they are irreplaceable. This is clearly not taken into consideration in the eyes of the law and the horrible enforcement of the Dangerous Dog Act. For many people their dog is their only trusted and loyal friend, their companion when everything else in their life is a sham or a disaster, when friends desert them, when times are tough, when their problems are piled high there is one thing they can always count on, the love and gentle presence of their pet dog. A family dog is priceless, their lives should never be taken away as a ‘pushing paperwork’ exercise, or as some mean way of teaching a person a lesson. I believe this does happen because not everyone who is in a position of authority cares for dogs and not everyone in authority does their job compassionately or in an unbiased way. But in future I hope those involved in Sam’s death will think twice before they assign a death certificate to a good natured family companion, because the day Sam was killed by the police they took away a huge and vital part of family life for his owners and left them with a video, happy memories and the guilt that they could not save him because they didn’t know what was happening to him.

Attention to detail is very important when you are dealing with life and death and this terrible mistake was surely avoidable.

    Rest in peace Sam xx

I think it is disgusting that this can be allowed to happen. Our country seems to be run by idiots who have fostered the idea that some dogs are dangerous. I would like to know the firm the travelling salesman worked for and whether he was cold calling as I certainly would not buy anything from his firm (this is presuming reported the nip he received to the authorities.)
