Puppy farm campaigners ‘Puppy Love’ are outraged by comments by Marc “the Vet” Abraham on his website suggesting that Puppy Love put politics above principles in pulling out of Mr Abraham’s event marking Puppy Farm Awareness Day on September 19th.
Last week, Kennel Club Veterinary Advisor Mr Abraham posted unfair and unjustified comments on his blog in reference to our withdrawal from the event, writing: “Really made me think about who’s really in it for the welfare of the animals and not their own egos/reputations and thankfully the true animal loving businesses who desperately want change really shone through. (link).
Mr Abraham contacted Puppy Love earlier this year to ask if we might be interested in being involved in “The Biggest Puppy Party in the World” event planned for September 19th. As the joint-founders of Puppy Farm Awareness Day (along with Hope UK and Puppy Alert), we were very keen initially, but became concerned in August when we were contacted by the Kennel Club asking for pictures of puppy farms the KC wanted to use to accompany its involvement in puppy farm campaigning. We learned that the Kennel Club would be attending Mr Abraham’s event and wanted to use the pictures in order to promote its Accredited Breeder Scheme.
We refused this request because Puppy Love’s investigations have produced proof that the Kennel Club itself registers puppies produced by puppy farms. Mr Abraham, who is a veterinary representative for the KC, was copied in on our reply to the KC. Mr Abraham replied to say that the KC is doing everything it can to address the puppy farm issue. But this is simply not true. Despite its public stance, the Kennel Club profits from puppy farms and in continuing to issue pedigree certificates to puppies bred in disgusting conditions, it helps perpetuate this evil trade.
In our response to Mr Abraham we pointed out that while the KC continues to register puppy farm dogs its stance is hypocritical. He replied asking us to put politics to one side for the “sake of the dogs” but, actually, for the sake of the dogs we decided that our energies would be better channelled elsewhere on September 19th and so decided to withdraw from the event.
Puppy Love is grateful to and supportive of Mr Abraham’s efforts on behalf of Puppy Farm Awareness Day and as such had no plans to publicise our reasons for pulling out of his event. However, in the light of Mr Abraham’s unprovoked attack on Puppy Love, we would like to take the opportunity to point out the following:
• Puppy Farm Awareness Day is our initiative (along with Hope UK and Puppy Alert) we are very grateful to the many volunteers at the many events up and down the country that helped make the day such a success
• Puppy Love is surprised at Mr Abraham’s attempts to claim the moral high ground given his affiliations to an organisation that perpetuates puppy-farm misery by registering puppy-farm dogs.
• Puppy Love spent Puppy Farm Awareness Day – as we have done one day a month for the past year – handing out leaflets outside Dogs 4 Us store in Leeds in order to highlight that these outlets sell puppies (some of them KC registered) produced in dubious circumstances.
• Puppy Love calls for the Kennel Club to immediately stop registering puppy-farmed dogs and join the real fight to stop puppy farming.

Protest puppy farms - don't buy from pet shops!
