Well written, Ryan.

Yet another example of the KC's hypocrisy. Have you tried cataloguing them?

If the quote from the KC that Bill Lambert the Accredited Breeder Scheme Adviser is to be believed he visits 'around 50 breeders a year' and all breeders who breed more than 10 litters a year are visited . Really ??? Are you telling me that there are only 50 people in the whole of the UK producing more than 10 litters a year and selling KC Registered puppies ? And only visiting 50 breeders ? If the KC were serious about canine welfare they would create and Inspectorate staffed by trained investigators who would go out and deal with complaints about breeders who were registering puppies with the Kennel Club. These investigators would be able to visit the breeder unanounced , speak with them about breeding practices and if required confirm facts with the breeders vet. No cooperation by the breeder then no more KC accreditation.

On the subject of vets , don't for a minute that just by having a vet supply a certificate covering the health of the dam you are improving welfare. In 17 years investigating animal welfare offences I've come across scores of corrupt vets who will write anything their client asks. A vet in Wales who supported a small animal sanctuary was always covering up animal welfare issues yet admitted that they had never actually visited to see the conditions the animals lived in just treated them or gave the owner medication when they asked for it. Another vet who provided certificates of competance for an exotic pet shop yet who was 70+ retired and had never dealt with snakes etc in their entire career. Many retired vets are still on the register and sell their services to breeders and similar individuals for additional income.

If the KC are serious about improving welfare then they could improve the situation overnight but obviously at the cost of revenue. I'm sad to say that clearly money talks and welfare walks at the moment.
