The link means that, with permission and in line with Anchor’s pet policy, residents can bring along their pets when they move into The Laureates and have peace of mind about what will happen to their animals should they become unable to look after them. It is also possible that The Laureates could have its own pet, should residents and Anchor wish.
The Laureates is the latest development from Anchor Trust, the largest not-for-profit provider of housing and care services to older people in the country. Anchor believes people have the right to choose how they live within their own home, something which does not change with age.
Owning a pet is widely acknowledged as being of significant benefit to the well-being of older people. Anchor recently had an opportunity to advise a parliamentary committee on this through a manager of another development who was invited to a meeting at the House of Commons to speak to MPs.
Cinnamon Trust is the only specialist national charity which seeks to relieve the anxieties, problems, and sometimes injustices faced by elderly and terminally ill people and their pets, thereby saving a great deal of human sadness and animal suffering. The Trust was founded in 1985 and anyone of any age can make arrangements for pets to come into the Trust’s care if needed.
Cinnamon Trust’s primary objective is to respect and preserve the treasured relationship between owners and their pets. It works in partnership with pet owners and has a national network of some 18,000 community service volunteers who provide practical help when any aspect of day-to-day care poses a problem. A good example would be dog walking for a housebound owner. A national fostering service is provided for pets whose owners face a spell in hospital, where volunteers take pets into their own homes and supply love and care in abundance until owner and pet can be reunited.
In practice, The Laureates will offer the services of Cinnamon Trust to residents who wish to take part, and in return will offer fundraising opportunities as well as promoting the Trust’s legacy pack. Cinnamon Trust makes no charge for its services and is dependent entirely on voluntary contributions as they receive no state or local authority aid.
Sam Wallace, manager of The Laureates, said: “I’m so pleased that we’re linking up with Cinnamon Trust. As a dog owner myself, I know only too well the unconditional love and companionship given to me by my pets. Knowing they’ll be looked after if I’m ill or incapacitated will mean everything and I’m going to do all I can to promote Cinnamon Trust to all my friends, colleagues and, of course, our new residents at the Laureates”.
