Dog Problems at Notting Hill Carnival
Claire Harper, a Mayhew Animal Home welfare Officer, was called out to a car parked in Queens Park, London (near to Notting Hill Carnival) with two tiny Yorkies trapped inside in the roasting 27 degree weather.
There were police on site so they broke the window of the blue Audi to rescue the dogs, who had extremely high temperatures and were very stressed from being trapped inside the vehicle. The Mayhew’s Animal Welfare Officer had to wrap them in wet towels to bring their body temperature down and cool them.
The neighbor who reported the dogs trapped said that they had been in the car for around 5 hours, so really were lucky to be alive as there was no water left inside and as dogs can’t sweat they over heat extremely quickly and can die in under a hour trapped in a hot car.
Claire Harper, said: “After we broke the window of the car, I crawled in and it literally was like an oven it there. Even after we had the doors open it was unbearable to be inside for even the short time rescuing the dogs. It is common knowledge that dogs can die incredibly quickly if left inside a hot car and it simply beggars belief that the owners of these poor animals chose to ignore this to go and have fun at carnival.”
The little dogs were taken to the RSPCA hospital in Putney where they are being looked after while the organization decides if they are going to launch an investigation.
Our AWO left a note on the car for the owners to come to The Mayhew and several hour later they appeared, where they told Claire that they had driven down from Birmingham and when they were told by police that no dogs were allowed at carnival they chose to leave them in the car.
