Pop star Sophie Ellis Bextor is joining The Mayhew Animal Home is appealing to carnival goers this weekend to consider adopting one of the victims of a tragic animal hoarding case from the West London borough.

While all the fun of the fair is happening in the area, The Mayhew will be looking after 14 cats and one dog who were among the 36 animals rescued from a third floor, one-bed flat in Notting Hill three weeks ago.

Animal Hoarding - a growing animal welfare problemThe 14 cats currently in the care of The Mayhew are now ready for adoption after having all had to undergo a lot of medical treatment to get them back on their paws, including dentals, vaccinations, neutering and even eye surgery in the case of Mrs Brownie (photo attached)

Sophie Ellis Bextor said: ““I’m extremely glad that rescue homes like The Mayhew exist to be able to rescue animals like these poor cats, stuck in a 3rd Floor, one-bed flat, and then treat them and nurture them back to health. I hope this story will remind people just how important neutering your pets is, as this terrible situation spiraled into a case of animal hoarding which should never be allowed to occur. Please neuter all of your pets, there is no excuse not too when places like The Mayhew offer free and low-cost appointments.”

Mayhew Animal Welfare Officer, Claire Harper, who went to the property to collect the animals, said: “The flat was in a disgusting state and it is incredible how all the animals managed to survive, as they hadn’t been fed well for some time, they were living in squalor and several had medical problems. It was also a great surprise to find that neighbours of the lady who had lived there only thought she only had the dogs and maybe a couple of cats!’

The Mayhew Animal Welfare Officers were called out after the lady living in the flat had died and housing officers were astonished to find all the desperate animals left trapped inside. It is estimated to cost the Home over 10,000 pounds to get all the animals on the road to health and look after them all at the centre in North West London until they can find homes for each one.

Mayhew Cat Adoption Officer, Lucy Edwards, said: “The majority of the cats were utterly overwhelmed on arrival at The Mayhew, due to having only experienced life in such cramped, stressful conditions. They are now getting on extremely well and enjoying one-to-one attention. We are looking to hear from people who may be able to give them a home. They certainly deserve a fresh start to make up for all the love and care they have missed out on.”

Toffee, the 10 year old Jack Russell, who was also living in the flat is also looking for a home and The Mayhew are interested from hearing from any potential adopters 0208 969 0178
