Dog Walkers Warned About Danger of Death From Cows

As there is not yet a Dangerous Cows Act, farming unions have instead opted for the old fashioned method of disseminating educational, common sense advice warning dog walkers to be aware of the dangers posed by cows with calves.

Three people have died in as many months as a result of being trampled on by cows.

Even former Home Secretary David Blunkett has come under attack, narrowly avoiding disaster when out walking his guide dog.

Farmers are more worried and advise walkers should know that cattle are naturally protective towards calves and can attack dogs.

The former Home Secretary David Blunkett was trampled earlier this year as he was out walking with his guide dog Sadie in the Peak District.

He spoke of the terrifying ordeal which caused him to suffer three broken ribs and bruising.

“It made me realise how serious this can be and I’ve had literally scores of letters from people injured or relatives of people who have been injured or even killed,” said Mr Blunkett.

According to the BBC, farming unions say walkers who feel threatened by cattle should always let their dog off the lead.

i’ve never had a fear of cows……that was until I had a dog and haphazardly walked through a field of cows and calves….the animals were at the very far end of the field but that didn’t stop the disgruntled heffers making their way at lightning speed toward me and my dog, i picked up my 5 stone mutt and carefully had to heave her over the other side of the wall, i followed promptly! completely my own lack of awareness and just not thinking straight! I tend to avoid fields with cows now days!
