The University of Lincoln is hosting a public debate around the training of companion animals through the use of ‘e-collars’, a form of electronic training collar. The debate has been organised by Professor Daniel Mills Head of Biological Sciences. Professor Mills is highly regarded for his work around animal behaviour.

The debate will take place on 28 February 2008. The motion to be debated by the guest speakers is: ‘This House believes that the use of electronic training devices on companion animals is a valid and acceptable means of training which should be allowed to continue on animal welfare grounds.’

The debate will be chaired by the Dean of Health, Life and Social Sciences, Professor Brian McGaw.

Members of the audience will be invited to put their questions to six representatives from organisations concerned with the use of electronic training devices, who have been invited to form the panel of experts. Three of the panel support the use of the devices and three are calling for further research into their use, or their withdrawal.

Tickets to the event are free but limited. To book your place e-mail lincolnwelfaredebate@yahoo.com or telephone: 01522 895358. The event will take place on 28th February 2008, starting at 7.30pm in the Jackson Lecture Theatre at the University’s Brayford Pool campus.
