The RSPCA yesterday reported yet another shocking case of more than 200 dogs living in squalid conditions as they uncovered what they believed to be a puppy farming operation.
Puppy farms are places where a large volume of pedigree dog breeds, usually breeds perceived to popular with owners, are bred for commercial gain.
They operate, in some ways, in a fashion similar to cattle farms as their ultimate aim is profit and sales.
Whilst there will always be a demand for certain breeds of dogs it is not possible to inform every person thinking of purchasing a pedigree pet of what to look out for and why puppy farms should be avoided.
The key to puppy farmers success is their ability to generate interest in their business. They do this by advertising in various media outlets, normally local free ads press and occassionally in other titles.
Whilst it is nearly impossible to ask or expect a media owner to refuse advertising from a ‘business person’ engaged in a perfecly legal activity, it remains the case that it is the media themselves who are enabling the practice of puppy farming to be a profitable one.
Various publications adhere to stict policies on not accepting advertising from what they judge to be commercial breeders (www.breederdirectory.co.uk is one such site) but whilst the many good seek to uphold a service promoting only the most responsible of dog breeders, there will always be some who are prepared to cash in and take advertising without asking too many, or indeed ‘the right’ questions of the people they are promoting.
Whilst puppy farmers are allowed the oxygen of publicity from media owners who don’t seek to uphold a moral or ethical code on where they earn their ad revenues, puppy farmers will always have an outlet to sell and promote their animals.
