This is a tragic story. I could feel tears welling up as I read, knowing how tragic it is to lose a beloved dog. I have however, never lost a dog to anything but old age, so I cannot imagine the grief of losing one at just 15 months.

However, it is certainly not true that only Europeans and North Americans have a love for domestic animals. My partner and I have a dog, I’m Scottish and he is Nigerian and he loves this dog more than I could ever imagine – that puppy has him wrapped around his little paw! Also, it is not my ‘western’ influence that has created this in him – he had lots of dogs growing up in Nigeria and I certainly consider him an animal lover. While I agree that culture influences how animals are treated, I certainly wouldn’t label whole continents as not caring for animal welfare.

My heart truly goes out to you- that is a tragic story. I think it is true, no one but certain European people have the deep profound attachment to animals and see them as more than food or vermin. I would not like to be a domestic animal in any place other than Europe or the US.
