A family have been using the scent of their own urine to locate their 10 year old dog, Simon, who went missing on the 4th July.

The BBC reports that the Baltesz family of Bristol have been leaving urine on the streets close to their home with the hope that Simon will catch their scent.

A spokeswoman from Bristol City Council said: ”We would not consider this to be a good idea from an environmental health point of view.”

Louise Baltesz said she is aware of the criticism the method has received but is willing try anything to get her dog back, who she describes as ‘not very approachable’ and naturally timid.

She said the idea came from a website which offers advice when trying to locate missing dogs. She has also put up missing posters in the area and has received a few positive sightings.

She said of the criticism: ”There are people who are upset about it, but I’m too emotionally drained to think about it…If everyone peed in the street it would be disgusting, wouldn’t it? But it’s very, very diluted.”

A nearby vet, Ian Wills from Zetland Veterinary Hospital in Bristol said: ”I think it’s an interesting idea but I would be pleasantly surprised if it worked…If the dog was going to follow his owner’s scent it would be from something they wore, like a jumper. Unless they have an incontinence problem.”
