Jemima Harrison took home the RSPCA’s top award for her work on the groundbreaking and highly influential documentary, Pedigree Dogs Exposed. It is the first time ever the RSPCA award has gone to a filmmaker. The RSPCA has given their highest accolade, the Richard Martin Award, to Jemima Harrison for making the BBC One documentary Pedigree Dogs Exposed. It is the first time the Award has been given to a film-maker.

Pedigree Dogs Exposed, which aired on BBC One last August to an audience of four million, highlighted health and welfare problems in pedigree dogs and led to the BBC suspending its coverage of Crufts after more than 40 years. The programme also led to the RSPCA, Dogs Trust and the PDSA pulling out of Crufts and three major reviews of dog-breeding in the UK. Soon after the broadcast, and in the face of continued pressure, the Kennel Club announced a raft of changes, including the revision of many breed standards and the banning of mother-to-son, father-to-daughter and sister-to-brother matings.

“Jemima’s commitment ensured the programme was completed, often in the face of abuse from hostile individuals and groups, and the impact was enormous, igniting a ground-breaking debate about pedigree dog welfare,” says RSPCA Chief Executive Mark Watts.

The citation reads: “To Jemima Harrison, for her commitment to the welfare of pedigree dogs”.

Pedigree Dogs Exposed was commissioned by Richard Klein. Executive producer was Eamon Hardy for the BBC. Jemima and her cameraman partner Jon Lane made the film through Passionate Productions, which they run from their thatched cottage in rural Wiltshire. The couple has five dogs of their own, a mix of pedigree and crossbreeds.

“We’re the tiniest independent on the planet, and we’re very proud of what we have been able to achieve with Pedigree Dogs Exposed,” says Jemima, who is currently working on related projects.

This is a MUCH deserved award and recognises the huge, monumental steps forward that the dog loving community have to collectively take to improve the welfare of our much-loved friends of a four-legged variety. For far too long the open secret of out and out welfare abuse and sheer cruelty toward dogs by *some* breeders with a misguided set of priorities was just accepted, glossed over and basically ignored. We should never, ever (ever) allow that to happen again. A line in the sand has been drawn and it was Pedigree Dogs Exposed which drew it!

    Very much deserved.

Yes the abuse and the misinformation that they have had to put up with is nothing short of shocking. But right will out in the end and thanks to this documentary the world of pedigree dogs will never be the same again.

This is a just recognition for that groundbreaking work.

May I join in here ,and say how wrong I was in the past in saying some of the things I said about Jemima Harrison, and how sorry now I am of ever saying them. I know now that her way is the only way of ever tackling the Health Problems in Pedigree Dogs.

If it had’nt been for her PDE TV Film ,would the Kennel Club or Breeders ever have taken any notice of what we Broken Hearted Pet Owners were trying to teel them about the Health Problems in our Cherished Pets. I think Not.

I have had the many tears as a result of some of our Cavaliers dying at such an early age from MVD Heart Trouble, hopefully now as a result of the PDE Film ,both for the MVD Problem and the other serious disease afflicting Cavaliers ,Syringomyelia, Cavalier Pet owners have now been made aware of those Two Health Problems ,and will always ask to see a Certificate showing that the Sire and Dam of the Cavalier Puppies have been MRI Scanned and show no signs of SM ,and Heart Checked to show that there are no signs of MVD

Again my Many Thanks and Congratulations to Jemima for what she has achieved.

    Bet Hargreaves
