On June 1st Al Murray, The Pub Landlord came direct from two sell-out nights at the O2 Arena to host a special fund raising night of comedy for The Mayhew Animal home in London
In order to raise money for abandoned cats and dogs, the infamous publican was joined by Grumpy Old Woman, Jenny Éclair, star of Mock The Week, Russell Howard and Simon Brodkin as Lee Nelson, as seen on ITV’s Multiple Personality Disorder.
In addition to a line up from some of comedy’s most popular stand up acts, Joanna Lumley drew the raffle prize tickets to the absolute delight of the crowd.
Al Murray said: “It is a sad fact that the number of animals abandoned annually is rising, so an evening of laughter and entertainment to balance that out is a great way to raise some money and awareness for The Mayhew Animal Home.”
In total, £6,800 was raised, -£1,150 from the raffle on the night and just under £500 from the three pint glasses that Al Murray sent around the audience, which was an amazing idea from him and much appreciated by us and the animals – he wouldn’t let them be returned to the stage until they were stuffed full of cash! Avalon management donated some amazing prizes for the raffle including a Sony Playstation 3 for the first prize winner. Joanna Lumley congratulated all the winners, which sent the crowds bananas with cheers and backing from The Pub Landlord that she should be running the country!
Mayhew CEO, Caroline Yates, said: “A fantastic evening was had by all and we can’t thank the comedians enough for taking time out of their busy schedules to support The Mayhew and raise money for the animals in our care with an evening of an evening of laughter and entertainment.”
