According to a report in today’s Sun, a pair of stray dogs, Labradors, are helping Royal Marines in their ongoing battle with the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Labradors Tangey and Charlie were adopted by troops who found them scavenging for food near their Afghanistan base.

And after six months’ training they help guard the 40 Commando Royal Marines C Company and act as lookouts by barking at signs of danger.

Tangey was even CAPTURED by the Taliban – who tortured him several times with a large knife before he escaped.

He found his way back to base in Kajaki and was patched up by vets.

Tangey and Charlie are now permanently based at Camp Bastion in the south of the country.

Sgt Major Dave Layton said: “I don’t understand how anyone could do what the Taliban did to Tangey, but then we are a nation of dog lovers.

“Everyone gets welfare packs sent from back home and that includes the dogs.

“People sent loads of doggie treats. They have become the celebrities of the base.”

A Marines spokesman added: “Tangey and Charlie have a vital role.”
