Children, Dogs and Hot Weather = Time for Extra Caution
Children, warm weather, and dogs, even family dogs, don’t mix well, according to a study conducted by pediatric otolaryngologists from the University at Buffalo’s School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.
It’s long been known amongst experienced dog owners that hot weather can be a catalyst for dog attacks upon children but now a report in a US medical journal confirms the theory.
Results show that young children are especially vulnerable to severe dog bites in the head and neck areas, and that there is a correlation between cases of dog bites and rising temperatures.
“A dog is man’s best friend, but could be a child’s worst companion,” notes Philomena M. Behar, M.D., UB clinical assistant professor of otolaryngology and the study’s corresponding author.
