This article is from the K9 Magazine archives, subscribe to our newsletter & get our best dog news, tips and articles ---->The police and RSPCA say dog fighting is on the rise and they will tackle this. I don’t know if it’s on the increase but it doesn’t matter to me. They should go for it! Catch the scum and leave them to rot in jail. Give me a call and ill help shove them in a dark cell, preferably with an axe wielding manic inside before I lock the door on them. A little bit of Karma.
It’s a bit extreme that sort of talk and sometimes; often in fact, people tell me I am too angry. Well newsflash people, I AM angry. Not TOO angry as I believe no one opposed to cruelty to dogs can ever get too angry (with very rare exceptions) but I am crazy angry at the whole charade surrounding pit bulls and this news article did not help:
For those who didn’t bother to read the link the story is simple. A man has been found guilty of training two dogs for fighting. Two dogs with scarring where found in his back yard. He was charged, found guilty and sentenced.
The Judge is quoted as saying “”Dog fighting is so prevalent in Birmingham I have to make an example of you.”
He then proceeded to hand out 18 DAYS in prison and lifetime ban from owning animals.
All I can say is I bet the guilty party was laughing as he was led from court. All sentences like that will do is allow this god awful “sport” continue as other scum see all they will get is a bit of a telling off! Why not just send him home with a grounding, or no internet for a month? Maybe write a letter saying “I’m sorry for being such an evil S.O.B” I think that would be as much of an “example” as the one dished out by the court.
18 days in prison, he will do half if that. Banned from having animals for life is all very well and good but doesn’t stop him living in a house with dogs, doesn’t stop his wife, mother, brother, lodger having a dog and certainly doesn’t stop him from abusing another dog again. Where is the lengthy prison time, the hefty fine?
This waste of space we call a person will enjoy his three square meals a day, probably play a little pool or x box while he’s inside. The only thing we haven’t done is send him somewhere hot with a nice beach to relax on! Meanwhile someone will inject his dogs with a lethal overdose of anaesthetic and watch them die . They will die after spending probably most of their life fighting to stay alive and the final year in “secure kennels”. They will probably be scared half to death, muzzled, in a strange place with strange people and try to stay awake before dying scared and alone.
Now don’t get me wrong, Im not saying these dog’s must be saved. That’s a whole separate debate. My point is right now these dogs, the abused dogs, the ones we claim to be protecting (good job on that btw!) they pay the real sentence. And it seems to me that the law is stacked against the “good guys”, be they dogs or people.
The dog fighter gets a slapped wrist, his dogs die. However the good owners, those with a good dog that may be a banned type, stand and fight for their dog’s life. They act responsibly and they too can face 6 months in prison, £5000 in fines, a criminal record and months or years of stress and worry while they wait to see if their dog will even survive the time its held in “police care”. One such owner was fined £2500 because she fought for her dog to come home and she wasn’t a dog fighter!
Its time to get real.
The DDA does not work and will not work. Many say it’s a great way of stopping dog fighting by preventing the ownership of those dogs. No, its not. The Animal Welfare Act covers dog fighting if we actually bothered to enforce that properly. The only way to stop dog fighting is to catch the freaks that do it, lock them up and throw away the key. Unless the Courts start taking the matter more seriously the only thing I do know for sure, is dog fighting WILL rise.
All hail this great nation of animal lovers.

Note this is only a question and novice speculation
Pitbull Breeders vs. Pitbull Fighters
good vs. bad or so that is always what I've been told
So let's say an organization busts a Pitbull breeder and then he is acquitted of charges. So he's innocent right?
You look at footage of the yard where the dogs are held. (in my version no one euthanizes the dogs as they do in most cases)
There are let's say 50 dogs attached to 4-foot, 100-pound chains living in their own filth and numbers spray painted on the doghouses. Already even without the fight it looks like a cruelty situation.
But it's not illegal because this breeder has everyone sign a disclaimer when they purchase a dog that states "they will not use the dog for illegal purposes". But someone pays thousands of dollars for a puppy from some of the worst kept dogs you've seen. And then there is a list of dogs from the yard like this:
Dirty Harry's Yard
Snuggles is an extremely game bitch who killed a dog in a kennel fight and ate all but it's tail from the yard of Dirty Harry bred with "Tonto" – who is a great head fighter. He can stay out of trouble while he dishes out some heavy punishment to his opponents head. "Tonto" is lightning fast and a strong skillful fighter and able to control his opponent. He leans on his rival and once it is tired and weak, he goes to the throat. In rolls he can handle dogs of any size with ease. He was bred by Nancy Reagan, raised by Brooke Shields and won a great match for Rocky Balboa and the guy just busted we'll call him Fred Flinstone. Fred handled and conditioned him for the match against a dog named Scooby Doo. Scooby was a real killer, but Tonto beat Scooby in 2 hours…. Tonto loves to fight…etc, etc, etc. more linage history and details of fights dogs have won…etc. etc.
So these dogs are being bred and sold to who? A suburban mom whose little girl asked for a pup from a game bitch and a head fighter for Christmas?
I guess you could say show people and weight pulls, but generally fighters don't like weight pulls or dog shows they understand, but show people and weight people and the people from the group 'responsible blue dog politics' stop Pitbull bans(which is good), Stop tethering limits, stop laws that allow officers to go on the property of puppymillers and breeders, and anything that could hurt their investment so they do like them.
And some of above 'almost' mentioned groups have interests in the breeding and fighting of these dogs, for instance in 'Fred Flinstone's case when he was recently busted and found guilty for dogfighting, a website administrator employed by one of the groups posted something almost like this, " Dag Nabbit! I just sent 2 of my dogs to Fred to Stud and now they probably confiscated them."
But my question is….why would someone have 50 to 150 dogs chained in the yard & breeding dogs that have from line after line of vicious fighting dogs?
If Dirty Harry wanted to keep Tonto's bloodline he could do so within a few litters. But that's not the case,he is studding him out for let's say $25,000 and breeding him in the yard producing I don't know how many pups.
But then I find out from people who say they would never fight their dogs that gameness and breeding are important because they make a better dog for agility, temperament, better with children, etc.
Hmmm? I don't know, that's why I'm asking here?
Isn't it true that the major breeders are in the rural areas, but the fights are going on every weekend at other underground locations?
And then you overhear one of Dirty Harry's friends saying, "You don't need to fight Dirty Harry's dogs to see if they are game. One of those bad boys brakes off the chain and that's enough right there to see if those they are game."
What's that? Does it mean they are attacking the other dogs on the spot? So if you take this dog home and use it for something else….is it going to do the same thing? OK there goes the gameness for good dog theory because it's going to make the park outing a little risky.
I don't know, that's why I'm asking. Because from a novice's viewpoint it looks, feels, tastes and smells like these dogs are being bred to fight and are being fought. No matter how you slice it, the breeder knows what he is breeding the dogs for, but darn it…he cannot control what the people he sells to do with their own dogs. And just think of all the money and pain.
Dog fighting is an addiction and breeding stronger, meaner, gamer dogs and seeing and hearing about their wins is an addiction as well.
