More Puppies die while in “police care”

Six puppies have died of “illness” while in police “care” according to an article in the Basingstoke Gazette . Three adult dogs and 7 puppies were seized by police as potential “pit bull types” in October of last year. One of the puppies is reported to have died after being crushed by the mother the remaining six are reported to have caught a virus and lost their lives as a result.

The welfare of dogs held in the care of authorities is of grave concern as reports of dogs cut, bleeding, mentally and physically effected by the time in kennels continues to grow. The U.K’s largest animal welfare charity the RSPCA, came under fire recently for concluding London Dog, Kodee, did not suffer unnecessarily despite being returned cut, thin, smelling and infested with worms.

With Defra to issue guidance on how to enforce the draconian Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 this year, we can only expect to see more seizures and more deaths of dogs whose only crime is in their physical appearance.

DDA Watch are urging all owners of dogs who are seized and returned in bad condition or sadly do not survive their incarceration, to issue formal complaints to the authorities and to contact DDA Watch for help and advice.

Alison Green of DDA Watch says:

” Seizing a dog because it may fall foul of one law does not mean the authorities can ignore the Animal Welfare Act. Had any dog owner, boarding establishment or even rescue centre allowed a dog to lose a drastic amount of weight, become flea or worm infested or worse, we would expect to be charged with causing unnecessary suffering. This is not happening and its an absolute disgrace. These dogs are suffering and dying and its simply not acceptable.”

For more information of your rights under the Dangerous Dogs Act please contact DDA Watch on 0844 844 2900 or email mail@dangerousdogsact.co.uk

Is this down to Hampshire Police?

What kennels were they kept at?

The company Animal Wardens Ltd has the Basingstoke council contract, were they involved?
