The Little Lion Dog Battles Back from Extinction

From being regarded as the rarest breed in the world, on the brink of extinction less than 50 years ago, the Lowchen is enjoying a touch of renaissance with over twice as many puppies being registered in the first quarter of 2007, than in the same period last year.

The Lowchen is also known as the ‘Little Lion Dog’ due to his looks – seen in his mane like fur – and not for his temperament, which is detailed in the official Kennel Club Breed Standard as “Intelligent, affectionate, showing no sign of aggression.”

They are good with children, and make an excellent house pet. They are attractive, with their coat coming in a variety of colours, and are friendly, happy little dogs which are very active and playful.

To the uninitiated he may look like a Poodle, but there are distinct differences – first and foremost the head, which is short and wide with large eyes. He also has a fine, long, silky coat.

The Lowchen is part of the Toy group. Toy group breeds are known for making ideal companion and lap dogs, and are bred for this capacity. They have friendly personalities and love attention, and do not need a large amount of exercise, but have tendencies to be finicky eaters.

Intelligent companions, owners must be careful with their attention as spoiled dogs can become protective of their owners. Ideally these dogs are extrovert companions and not untouchable ornaments.

The origins of the Lowchen pedigree dog are obscure, though generally believed to be European, and it is suggested that he has affinities with the Bichon Frise. The Lowchen’s home country is listed as France though the breed has also been established in Spain and Germany since the 1500s. As recently as 1960 the Lowchen was described as being the rarest breed in the world, following years of decline and loss of favour, but the breed has increased in numbers, being registered in Britain for the first time in 1971 and gaining Championship status here just five years later.

The Lowchen celebrates 40 years in the UK in 2008, with the anniversary being marked at the Lowchen Championship show at the Shenstone village hall in Staffordshire.
