The Kennel Club has today released its annual registration figures.
Volumes are fairly static – 271,719 puppies registered in 2008 (at £12 per pup, that’s £3,260,628 in revenue – nice work if you can get it!)
The figure that stood out to me and is mentioned in the Kennel Club’s own release:
Some traditionally docked breeds have seen their numbers fall quite significantly since the introduction of the docking ban in 2006. Just two years ago, Rottweilers were the 11th most popular breed by registration but they have now fallen to 20th in 2008. Just 2,631 puppies were registered last year, representing a drop of 60% from their 2006 level of 6,575 dogs. Similarly, Dobermanns have also seen a decrease of almost 45% in their numbers over the past two years.
So the Rottweiler has not only fallen out of the top 11 ‘most popular’ breeds, it’s out and out nosedived all the way to 20th – and the reason? The tail docking ban!
I remember when the tail docking ban was being proposed (incidentally, the Kennel Club opposed the ban in direct conflict with the views and will of animal welfare campaigners and veterinarians – where have we heard that ‘tail’ since?) and I saw some breeders (of Rottweilers funnily enough) who, in a fit of proposterous childishness ‘threatened’ to ‘pull out of the breed if the ban comes in’. Well, my word, they weren’t bluffing were they? These imbeciles who claim to have a love for dogs have, as it turns out, got as much attachment to the lopping off of the dog’s tail as the dog does to the whole idea of keeping it!
How incredibly revealing, stomach churning and pitiful that breeders/exhibitors have opted to just ditch a breed because they can no longer whip its tail off. Wow, that sucks to be them, it really does.
But here’s food for thought. Where did these dock-happy rats jump ship to? Are the scissor sisters currently infesting another breed having abandoned the much-malinged, and desperately in need of friends Rottweiler?
The biggest increases in individual breed numbers came in French Bulldogs and Smooth Coated Chihuahuas, both of whom saw 49% rises in their registration numbers during 2008.
Hmmm. A 49% rise in registration numbers. So that means either a lot of ‘established’ French Bulldog and Smooth Coated Chihuahuas breeders are prodcing a hell of a lot more stock – no doubt to the meet the demand for these highly desirable designer pedigrees – or the two breeds have attracted some new breeders. Let’s just hope those new breeders aren’t the sort of change-their-allegiance-with-the-winds-of-fashion and ditch the breed the moment things aren’t going their way type of folks who’ve just given the Rottweiler the old heave-ho!
Let’s just hope that French Bulldogs and Smooth Coated Chihuahuas aren’t clocking up days in shelters in the next 10 years – like the poor old Rottweiler. Fairweather, trend-hopping friends who abandon ship the moment there are changes introduced to enhance the welfare of the breed are really not what pedigree dogs need right now. Oh, but I forgot, it’s only the so-called ‘designer crossbreed’ breeders who are guilty of that, isn’t it?
Highly Recommended: This could be the most important link you EVER click as far as your dog’s life is concerned – see why….!

Or could it just be down to the fact that two babies were killed by Rottweilers, Cadey-Lee Deacon in September 2006 and Archie Lee at the end of 2007. As in the 90's Responsible Breeders stopped breeding and the puppy/ pet people soon realised that they couldn't even give the puppies away. Unfortunately, dobermanns being also large black and tan fell into the same category.
But hey why pass up the chance to slag off dog breeders?
"Responsible breeders stopped breeding" ha, ha – best laugh I've had all day. You do come up with some tosh but that one goes straight to the top of the pile. What a tool! How do you account of the drop off in the OTHER DOCKED breeds then, like Doberman's, as cited in the KC's OWN press release, Columbu you most certainly are not. Still, as I say, entertaining in your obsession. Made me laugh.

It is obvious to me O'Meara that you know very little of the subject that you like to bleat on about. You are cast from the same mould as the likes of beverley cuddy and emma milne as like them you seem obsessed with making comments that will get you some media attention. The rise on the number of Rottweiler’s in rescue is a result of biased accusations by the media towards the breed that have led owners to abandon their dogs for no reason other that they believe the rubbish printed by the press. But if you had any knowledgeable experience of the dog world worth listening in the you would already know this.
Really. And I'll presume you have the 'facts' to back this up? You have the evidence to support it? I'll wait for you to provide it. And then you can go on to explain how the OTHER DOCKED breeds have also seen a drop off as per the Kennel Club's press release. I'll wait for your evidence to back up your claim.
Yes I worked in rescue and it wasn't breeders bringing thier own dogs through the doors it was members of the public bringing thier dogs as a result of the hysteria created by the press ! and in cased you missed it my comments are in relation to your commnets about the amount of Rottweilers in rescue and not the subject of docking !
Yes, well you've obviously missed the point then and should perhaps do more READING before you commit your theories to public view. This story is about the registration numbers dropping off. This story is about KENNEL CLUB registered Rottweilers going from the 11th most popular to 20th and it ALSO cites OTHER docked breeds and specifically draws reference to the DOCKING ban. The entire story is in reference to the KC registration numbers and the fact that the docking ban has resulted in a drop off in Rottweilers being registered. And as I happen to own the national dog adoption website dogsblog.com I have an acute awareness of the numbers of Rottweilers in rescue AND how and why they get there. At NO point in the article ANYWHERE does it say the reason Rottweilers are in rescue is because of the docking ban. |Furthermore, the negative publicity surrounding Rottweilers has been around for many years, well before the docking ban – so if your theory is that breeders are responsible in not producing Rottweilers because of negative publicity then you are, quite categorically wrong, unless you want to make an argument that negative publicity for Rottweilers is a NEW thing! Which, I can quite easily prove, it is not. So I recommend you read more carefully in the future before making foolish comments which don't stand up to scrutiny.

Maybe I must learn to do more reading or what bearing does the above have to do with docking exactly ?
You're right, you could use more reading. The issue is abandonment. This is not an article about docking, it is an article about a breed that has been abandoned by people who were supposed to care about it. That they abandoned the breed because they could no longer dock the puppies or because they wanted to move to more 'profitable' breeds is neither here nor there to me, both are spurious – abandonment and the reasons for it is the central theme of the article.
Oh so its not about docking ! Are you sure ? Sounds like your twisting and turning like a labour MP, Maybe you should look up the defintion of abandonment in the dictionary, then maybe you can give me the hards facts as to how many Rottweiler breeders have abandoned thier dogs ?
Oh dear. You really are finding this hard to follow aren't you. I feel if I dumb it down any further it will go beyond patronising and in to the realms of baby talk. Anyway, here it is in as simple terms as I can make it.
This is an article which takes from the Kennel Club's OWN registration figures the fact that the number of traditionally docked breeds has plummeted since the docking ban was brought in. In other words, breeders who used to be involved with breeds are now leaving those breeds because of the docking ban. The Rottweiler is a breed that has seen particular decline in the number of puppies being registered SINCE THE DOCKING BAN. So do you see? That is cold, hard clinical facts that breeders who WERE breeding Rottweilers have abandoned the breed – in other words – one day they were breeding Rottweilers, then came a docking ban, and now they're not. Follow? So, what this shows is that these breeders were quite happy to be involved in this breed when they were allowed to have its tail cut off, then when the law changed and they could no longer do that, they abandoned the breed – hence less were registered. It's pretty basic stuff, this. As I say, I can't spell it out any clearer for you. Certainly no twisting and turning from my end but, it would appear, some comprehension troubles on yours.
i wont swear at your bigoted comment may i say about the child ripped to shreds by a jack russell and the lurcher wheres the bad press for them eh nowhere is it we have always had rotts and kids our kids respect dogs and the dogs respect us both sets of dogs that attacked those kids were working guard dogs the adults in that home should of known better than to think a dog kept outside with a job to do will become a lap dog over night and the dogs in the pub were fed off sticks because they were needed for security because of the area yet again the adult not being responsible leaving the access door open for the dogs to get in they were only allowed in to the premises when they were working it could of been any breed of dog my heart goes out to those who have lost there kids but in all cases its the people at fault
a responsible rottweiler owner jo murray
ok but the reason is that people dont want to buy a rottie with a tail so breeders arnt selling as much so move on to more popular selling breeds which is why i have to go to ireland to buy my pup
I have bred from my Rottweiler bitch to pass on her genes as she is such a loving gentle dog, I want people to realise that Rottweilers aren’t all a breed to be avoided. I have her 2 year old son from her last litter(only puppy)He is just as loving and gentle as his mother, he does naturally guard our property and anyone with criminal intent would think twice before tying to pass him. He has never been taught or trained to guard. That in my opinion is where people go wrong. Trained to guard and to be viicous is very diffiult to control and maintain. This is only my opinion. One word from me and he stops barking and knows all is well if a friendly stranger omes to call. I have 5 puppies at the moment ( all docked and dew clawed as it is legal where I live and yes I know some people don’t agree with this but dew claws get ripped off easily and can be very painfull in an adult dog and no one seems to mind that this pratice of removing them is ok yet no more or less traumatic to the puppy than docking) and will be very carefull who I sell them to as any responsible breeder would be. My bitch has been brought up properly as has her son, its the owners who are at fault when dogs go bad, not the dog. If any dogs shouldn’t be pets its the collie, most collies are bred to work in some way and don’t thrive as pets. They can be very unpredictable if not kept ative and stimulated. I have had many years experience as an owner /breeder/carer and like to think I know what I’m talking about!.
