“Don’t Put Woolies Dog to Sleep!”
As the newly elected US president pontificates about one of his earliest White House pledges – to adopt a shelter dog – the UK’s leading dog adoption service has offered a second chance to the canine mascot of recently demised store, Woolworths.
‘Worth’ is the talking canine who appeared in Woolworths TV and marketing campaigns alongside celebrities such as Rolf Harris.

The UK’s leading dog adoption service, DogsBlog.com, has steped in to try and make sure this is one ‘asset’ that doesn’t get discarded along with the Pic ‘n’ Mix as Woolies’ closes its doors all over the UK.
The publishers of the site have opened discussions with the adminstrators of Woolworths – Deloitte – with a view to giving a ‘new home’ to the former mascot, offering to install ‘Worth’ as the new, permanent face of the website – which has rehomed nearly 4,000 shelter dogs since its launch in January 2007.
The gesture is all part of an ongoing effort to prove to the nation that dogs given a second chance can still bring lots of fun, enjoyment and value even if their former owners no longer want them.
DogsBlog.com founder Ryan O’Meara:
“It may seem like a bit of a trivial thing to do but there is a really serious and symbolic message behind our efforts to re-home the Woolies’ dog. Every year thousands and thousands of dogs are given up due to all manner of different reasons. But in the current credit crunch driven climate this is an even bigger problem than usual. We see this as a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate that just because a dog loses its original home or owner it doesn’t mean he or she doesn’t have a lot to offer if given a second chance. We would dearly love to adopt Worth as we feel his ongoing presence as the face of DogsBlog.com would serve to remind people that giving a dog a second chance can really pay off for both dog and owner. He would be the embodiment of everything a rescued dog represents.”
Tragically, thousands of dogs are abandoned every year. There are more than 100,000 dogs seeking new homes in UK rescue shelters at any one time and the credit crunch has lead to even more dogs being given up as owners find themselves being caught out with unplanned for veterinary costs or simply can’t find the money needed to care for their dog’s ongoing expenses.
There is good news on the horizon though. The US president’s decision to adopt a shelter dog has created a wave of interest from people who would not ordinarily considered adoption as a first choice. Similarly, the furore over the health of certain pedigree breeds following the broadcast of BBC documentary Pedigree Dogs Exposed has created a much larger interest in crossbreeds and older, healthy dogs. It is hoped that DogsBlog.com’s adoption of the familiar Woolworth’s dog will act as a constant symbol of how fulfilling and rewarding it can be to give a discarded dog a second chance.
